Our friends over at Jedi News are reporting that Scott Derrickson, director of The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) and the upcoming Marvel Studios film Doctor Strange (2016), is the latest director to join the Star Wars family. No word yet on whether he'll be helming Episode IX, following in the footsteps of JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson, or will be taking on a stand alone film, after Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank get their shot.
My initial reaction is that, if this is true, he'll be doing the third stand alone film. Like with Trank and Edwards this would be a bit of a departure for Derrickson, who is best known for his work in the horror genre. But that seems to the trend for the stand alone films, get a filmmaker who you wouldn't expect to do a Star Wars film and get them to do a Star Wars film. As for the veracity of the rumor, Jedi News are not the types to put out everything and anything they hear, I would be more inclined to believe this rumor knowing that. In addition, Jason Ward over at MakingStarWars.net says he's heard the same thing, which gives the rumor another boost in terms of potential truthfulness.
As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
