Rian Johnson Talks Practical Effects

Rain Johnson has been all but confirmed to be directing and writing Star Wars Episode VIII, and he's been out and about a lot recently to talk about it. Although he remains very reserved about expressing anything beyond his happiness with being involved with the Saga, the Girls In Hoodies Podcast got him to spill a few interesting things.

When the conversation gravitated to Episode VII, Johnson admitted that he had recently been in London where shooting for the film was taking place. And as The Hollywood Reporter reports, he had a lot to say about practical and CGI effects:

“They’re doing so much practical building for this one. It’s awesome,” Johnson said on the latest Girls in Hoodies podcast. “I think people are coming back around to [practical effects]. It feels like there is sort of that gravity pulling us back toward it. I think that more and more people are hitting kind of a critical mass in terms of the CG-driven action scene lending itself to a very specific type of action scene, where physics go out the window and it becomes so big so quick.”

“I probably sound like a grumpy old man talking about it,” Johnson continued. “I do wonder because I think kids are growing up watching those and that’s the thing that they love now, so I don’t know whether it is a generational thing, and it could be.”

You can watch the full discussion here.

As we've heard many times before from those behind the scenes of Episode VII, it certainly sounds like these new films will utilize a great deal of practical effects. And it only makes sense considering Star Wars' legendary history pioneering practical filmmaking. The Original films are know for their use of models, miniatures, puppets and massive sets. The Prequel Trilogy later continued the trend, featuring even more practical effects mixed with groundbreaking computer effects created by Industrial Light & Magic. It's safe assume the Sequel Trilogy will continue this trend into the future!
