Sounds like the Empire might be getting a bit of a redesign/upgrade for the sequel trilogy. If you're trying to avoid spoilers, the following may contain plot details from Episode VII (we won't know for sure until December 18, 2015) so stop reading now. The good folks over at MakingStarWars.net have heard some interesting details from various sources about what the stormtroopers in Episode VII will be.
According to MakingStarWars.net, the stormtroopers will be,
- more advanced/modern looking than those seen in the original trilogy (OT)
- the dimensions of the troopers will be slightly different from the OT (though the look of the troopers changed slightly throughout the OT, so this is nothing new to Star Wars)
- new stormtoopers have ponchos and/or capes (my money's on ponchos)
- There will be chrome and black stormtroopers.
I've more or less come to terms with the possibility that the Empire is still around in the sequel era (despite being against it initially). The stormtrooper design changed slightly throughout the OT era so the idea that the design will have changed (minimally or majorly) over thirty years makes perfect sense.
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
