If you thought today's casting announcements meant the end of casting rumors, boy were you wrong! Not even 12 hours later and we already have another casting rumor. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that JJ Abrams still has one "substantial role" left to be filled. The role is reportedly for a female part.
Several sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that director J.J. Abrams has another substantial role to fill — and it's a female part. No further details are known.
Amid the excitement earlier about the announcement there were some voices crying out about a lack of female characters (the returning Carrie Fisher, newcomer Daisey Ridley, and producer Kathleen Kennedy were the only women in the male dominated picture). While two female leads is already double the number of female leads there were in the previous trilogies, there is always room for (and probably should be) more! Plus the casting breakdown released several months ago called for two new female characters and Ridley was the only new female announced so....
Looking back at past rumors, it was rumored that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o was close to signing on to be in the film and THR themselves reported that Maisie Richardson-Sellers was under strong consideration for major part. Looks like we'll have to keep waiting. As Princess Leia once said, "It's not over yet."
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
