Disney confirmed today that Star Wars Episode VII will be getting an IMAX release when it hits theaters on December 18th, 2015 (637 days to go!) Disney confirmed this in a press release which also confirmed IMAX releases for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and more.
No word on whether parts of the film will be shot with IMAX cameras, or if the 35mm print will projected onto an IMAX screen (like they did with Revenge of the Sith). Episode VII director JJ Abrams does have experience working in IMAX, shooting parts of Star Trek Into Darkness in the format. When asked about it back in January, Abrams was non-committal saying, "In the right situation, I’d like to use IMAX again. The problem with
IMAX is that it’s a very loud camera. It’s a very unreliable camera." Perhaps Abrams decided that Episode VII was "the right situation".
Regardless it's exciting to hear that we'll be able to see Episode VII on the even bigger screen!

LOS ANGELES – March 20, 2014 – IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX) and The Walt Disney Studios, a division of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS), today announced an agreement to release several of Disney’s upcoming films in IMAX® theatres under an extension of the companies’ long-running relationship.
Under the agreement, IMAX will be part of Disney’s release strategy for its most highly-anticipated live-action tentpole films, including Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 2014), Maleficent (May 2014), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (August 2014), and Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron (May 2015), Tomorrowland (May 2015) and Star Wars: Episode VII (December 2015).

Gelfond. “The combination of the great product being created by Disney and the overwhelming enthusiasm of moviegoers to see films in IMAX theatres makes this agreement really exciting.”
