'The Last Jedi' IMAX Poster Revealed

IMAX has revealed their exclusive poster for Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Twitter today.  The poster features Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren, Rey, Leia Organa, Finn, Poe Dameron, Rose Tico, Chewbacca, Captain Phasma, C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8.  The new poster also continues the colour palette established by the other posters, with an emphasis on red and white in the poster.  The film will be released in IMAX on December 15th (same day as its regular release) and some scenes were shot for the film using IMAX cameras.  Check it out below,

Rian Johnson Shot Scenes For 'The Last Jedi' Using IMAX Cameras

In this new era of Star Wars films, the new Star Wars filmmakers have been making use of the IMAX cameras to shoot specific sequences for their films.  JJ Abrams shot the Millinnium Falcon's escape from Jakku in The Force Awakens with IMAX cameras and now it's been announced that Rian Johnson shot scenes from the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi with the high resolution cameras.  This comes from and announcement by Disney and IMAX that they are extending their longstanding deal through 2019.

New 'Rogue One' IMAX Posters Unveiled

AMC Reveals Another Exclusive IMAX Poster For 'The Force Awakens'

As if you needed an incentive to go out to the theater and see The Force Awakens again, AMC Theatres is sweetening the deal for those going on Sunday. Each week since the film premiered AMC has unveiled a new exclusive poster, featuring artwork by Dan Mumford, that is given out to those who see The Force Awakens in IMAX 3D on Sunday.

The first poster featured Rey and BB-8 amidst the ship graveyard on Jakku. The second shows Poe Dameron on his X-Wing with fighters flying overhead. And the latest one, which is slated to be given away this Sunday, January 3rd, features a striking image of Captain Phasma standing amidst the burning ruins of Maz Kanata's castle.. You can check it out below:

So no matter if you're seeing it for the second or tenth time, this Sunday is a great time to head out to your local AMC Theater to see The Force Awakens in IMAX 3D. And there is still one yet to be revealed poster that will be given away the following Sunday on January 17th, so be on the lookout for it!

We are now less than a week away from Star Wars: The Force Awakens being released in theaters.  One unique aspect about The Force Awakens is that it features one sequence shot with IMAX cameras.  Now, IMAX has released a brand new featurette with director JJ Abrams as well as cast members Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) talking about the IMAX format.  Check it out below,

'The Force Awakens' IMAX Poster Revealed

StarWars.com revealed the special IMAX poster for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. The poster features Rey and BB-8 walking in a massive Jakku sunset.  Check out the poster below,

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will reportedly open in just about every IMAX screen worldwide and will stay there for the first four weeks of its run.  One sequence in the film was shot in IMAX, so it's sure to be an amazing sight to behold.

I have to say I love this poster.  It's great to see Rey front and center.  It shows that they're not hiding the fact that the film has a female lead, which sends a strong message from Lucasfilm and Disney.  Plus it's such a striking visual.

Report: 'The Force Awakens' To Premiere At 7pm On December 17th At Certain U.S. Theaters

Anticipation is rising quickly as we approach the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens on December 18th. Earlier this week we heard a rumor that tickets for the film will go on sale on October 19th, which has left many fans planning and speculating about the first showing of Episode VII in theaters. Most of us have assumed up until now that we will be seeing The Force Awakens at 12:01am on December 18th, but a new report appears to contradict that line of thought.

/Film is reporting that at least one theater has confirmed that the first screening of The Force Awakens will be happening at 7:00pm the preceding day, December 17th. Jerry Salcedo on Twitter tweeted at Esquire IMAX Theatre in Sacremento, California asking about the release date, to which they responded:

@jerrybskinny First screening is set for December 17th (7pm). Stay tuned on our social media pages to find out when tickets go on sale.

And we must emphasize that this does not mean all theaters will be following suit with this plan. This early premiere could be exclusive just to this type of theater, or select others. We won't know anything until tickets go on sale officially.

Report: Disney Books Almost All IMAX Screens Worldwide for 'The Force Awakens' Release

Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens is going to own IMAX screens.  And that's not an exaggeration.  The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Disney has booked almost every IMAX screen worldwide, including 375-400 screens in North America and 400+ screens overseas, to show The Force Awakens for the first four weeks of its theatrical run.  According to THR,

"Imax reserving all of its screens for a single movie for a month is not unprecedented, but it is unusual. The company had a similar deal for the three Hobbit movies, but it struck that pact four years ago and hasn't made that type of commitment since.

In June, Imax broke its own opening-weekend record when Jurassic World leapfrogged over Iron Man 3's $28.8 million to grab $44.2 million worldwide — $21 million from 363 domestic screens and $23.2 million from 443 screens abroad."

In addition to be released in IMAX, The Force Awakens does feature one sequence shot using IMAX cameras.  Director JJ Abrams is a fan of the format and had previously used IMAX cameras on Star Trek Into Darkness.  The sequence in question will include the shot of the Millennium Falcon flying over the desert plains of Jakku from the first teaser (a still from that sequence was released in IMAX aspect ratio back in November).  Eagle eyed viewers of the San Diego Comic Con reel will have also noticed that IMAX cameras can be seen in the Falcon's cockpit when Daisy Ridley is at the helm, so it seems safe to assume that Rey will be piloting the Falcon in this sequence.

Rumor: 'The Force Awakens' IMAX Details Revealed

What's better than seeing Star Wars on the big screen? Seeing Star Wars on the biggest screen! The Force Awakens will be shown in IMAX theaters everywhere this December alongside standard theaters which will surely make for an amazing experience. We of course learned that at least one scene in the film will be shot with IMAX Cameras, and we saw evidence of this in the behind the scenes reel that was recently released at San Diego Comic Con.

Our friends at Making Star Wars have shared some interesting details about how The Force Awakens will be presented at IMAX theaters. Here's what they had to say:

"I was invited by my local IMAX theatre to help install “The Force Awakens” in the IMAX projector a week upon release and I was given the complete specs of the presentation. Here are the details for what one can expect from the “true’ IMAX experience of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

The theaters that house a “true” eight story tall IMAX screen will present the film in actual 70MM film reel; presenting the 70MM shot scenes in its full screen glory.

There will be two 70MM prints running through the IMAX projector to have the film play in IMAX 3D; rest assured it’s not the gimmick post converted 3D. It’s what IMAX was founded on, showcasing the best and most immersive 3D ever.

The 70MM IMAX presentation will not play at the “gimmick” shrunk IMAX theaters. Those will showcase the standard Digital IMAX converted format.

Look below for the comparisons between standard widescreen shot to a 70MM IMAX frame."

They also confirmed that the sequence that is filmed in IMAX is indeed the Millennium Falcon being chased by TIE Fighters over Jakku, which we see in the trailers. Of course all of this should be considered rumors until otherwise confirmed by Lucasfilm. Nevertheless, those scenes will no doubt be amazing to see in all their gigantic glory when Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits IMAX theaters December 18th!

'Rogue One' and Episode VIII to be Released in IMAX

IMAX announced today the upcoming slate of Disney films that will be released in IMAX theaters.  This included the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One (slated for a December 16, 2016 release date) and Star Wars Episode VIII (slated for a May 26, 2017 release date).  Also announced were all the upcoming Marvel and Pixar movies.

The question is, will these films features sequences shot in IMAX? Or will they simply be released in IMAX theaters?  Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will also be released in IMAX and features one sequence shot with IMAX cameras.

Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards, written by Chris Weitz, and stars Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything).  Star Wars Episode VIII is written and directed by Rian Johnson.

Report: One Sequence In Episode VII Will Be Shot In IMAX

Earlier this year it was confirmed that Star Wars Episode VII will be released in IMAX, and later we learned that an IMAX camera was being used for Episode VII. Since then it's been unclear how much of the film would be shot in IMAX, but now we have a more precise answer courtesy of Variety. Earlier this week they featured a piece about IMAX which included a quote from Episode VII Director J.J. Abrams, in which he confirmed that only one sequence in the film will be shot in IMAX:

“The benefits outweigh the headache of shooting on Imax cameras,” says Abrams, who used them for a single sequence in “Star Wars.” “The opportunity to have an action sequence for this movie done in Imax’s natural format was too delicious an idea to pass up. As a filmgoer, it’s something I want to see.”

In July of this year the above photo was tweeted by Bad Robot and led us to believe it was from the set of Episode VII. Now that we know only one sequence of scenes will be filmed in IMAX, it's interesting to wonder what could possibly be happening here(gotta be Tatooine) that is epic enough to deserve the IMAX treatment. I suppose we'll find out next year when Episode VII hits theaters, both regular and IMAX, on December 18th, 2015!

Report: Episode VII Set Photo & IMAX Details

Today J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot tweeted an image of an IMAX camera hovering over a Tatooine-looking landscape, with the only the hashtag: #bestformatever Many immediately assumed this to be from Episode VII, and a confirmation that at least part of the film is be filmed in IMAX.

Later, /Film contacted an IMAX representative who said; “All we can say at this point is that we can confirm that JJ Abrams is using the IMAX camera for Star Wars: Episode VII.”

They also confirmed that it will be shot on 70mm IMAX film.

/Film later added: UPDATE: "Pajiba also added that Abrams is shooting the film on three, 65mm 2D IMAX cameras. (There are only four in the world and the other is being used for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). After that, it’ll be converted to 3D just like Abrams did on his last film Star Trek Into Darkness. UPDATE 2: However, IMAX officials responded saying they “did not provide or confirm” that information."

Obviously we already knew Episode VII was going to be released in IMAX, that was confirmed months ago. What's new is the fact that at least some scenes will be filmed with IMAX cameras and not converted to IMAX in post-production. And it's also worth noting that they did not confirm the tweeted photo is from Episode VII. But, considering Bad Robot's track record of sharing photos from the set, I think we're safe to assume that is indeed Tatooine.

Nevertheless, it's going to be awesome seeing Star Wars on a massive IMAX screen! Decemeber 18th, 2015 can't come soon enough!

Confirmed: Episode VII to be Released in IMAX!

Disney confirmed today that Star Wars Episode VII will be getting an IMAX release when it hits theaters on December 18th, 2015 (637 days to go!)  Disney confirmed this in a press release which also confirmed IMAX releases for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron and more.

No word on whether parts of the film will be shot with IMAX cameras, or if the 35mm print will projected onto an IMAX screen (like they did with Revenge of the Sith).  Episode VII director JJ Abrams does have experience working in IMAX, shooting parts of Star Trek Into Darkness in the format.  When asked about it back in January, Abrams was non-committal saying, "In the right situation, I’d like to use IMAX again.  The problem with IMAX is that it’s a very loud camera.  It’s a very unreliable camera."  Perhaps Abrams decided that Episode VII was "the right situation".

Regardless it's exciting to hear that we'll be able to see Episode VII on the even bigger screen!
