Kathleen Kennedy Talks Spin-Off Films

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was in attendance at the opening of the new 'Sandcrawler' building in Singapore and she spoke with The Strait Times about the upcoming Star Wars Spin-off films,

"George was so clear as to how that works. The canon that he created was the Star Wars saga. Right now, episode seven falls within that canon. The spin-off movies, or we may come up with some other way to call those films, they exist within that vast universe that he created," she says.

"There is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes. Consequently, from the creative standpoint, it's a roadmap that George made pretty clear," she adds.

Sounds like, and this is pure speculation, the spin-off films won't be related to the sequel trilogy very much, in that we won't have a character debut in the 2016 spin-off film and then show back up in Episode IX.  This seems to line up with previous rumors about the spin-off films, with the main rumors seem to focus around previously established characters like Boba Fett, Darth Vader, and Yoda, not new characters.  It does raise the question about the rumored Han Solo spin-off film, since we are inclined to believe Han will be showing up in, at least, Episode VII, if not the entire sequel trilogy.

As far as I'm concerned, the spin-off films and the sequel trilogy should be as separate as possible.  Maybe down the line we can see some cross over (assuming they do new 'episodes' following VII, VIII, and IX), but for now let's just get everyone used to having Star Wars back on the big screen every year.
