He has gone on record in the past saying that he is a big Star Wars fans and would jump at the opportunity to be in the new films. During an interview with Total Film promoting Star Trek: Into Darkness, Cumberbatch had this to say regarding The Wars:
"I’ve already asked him (JJ Abrams) if I can be a lightsaber and we’re in talks -
about whirring sounds and the rates for the lights and everything [laughs].
"I thought, ‘Yeah, I grew up with them,’ and I just looked recently at when they were released and now I’m like, ‘No, I didn’t grow up with them, I was born with them.’ They were a huge part of my background, and my upbringing.
"I was much more connected to [Star Wars] as a kid, in the way that a lot of kids are because it’s immediate storytelling, very simple - a beautifully, outrageously simple narrative in a way - and a wonderful three-act melodrama, opera. And I loved them. I really, really loved those films and I always wanted to be Han Solo. Everything Harrison Ford did I just thought was the coolest thing ever - Raiders Of The Lost Ark was very much my upbringing as well."

Could Cumberbatch be the big Episode VII announcement that's hinted at in the past week or so. He certainly is a talented actor and a big name, especially in the "geek" community where Cumberbatch is already know for three major roles - Sherlock Holmes, (spoilers!) Khan, and the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit Trilogy. It would be a major announcement for one of the hottest actors in Hollywood to be cast, and you would think Disney and Lucasfilm would want to make a big splash with their first casting announcement for the new film.
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed by Lucasfilm or Disney.
