Prior to the exciting announcement that Star Wars Celebration would be heading to Anaheim in 2015 (April 16th-19th), there was a good chance that it would have wound up back in Orlando. The Orange County Convention Center, which hosted Celebrations V and VI in 2010 and 2012 respectively, was in talks to host the next Celebration, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.
Kathie Canning, executive director of the Orange County Convention Center, revealed that there were talks to return in to the OCCC 2014 (not 2015) and that Lucasfilm ultimately chose to go elsewhere, specifically Anaheim. Canning seems to be quite understanding regarding the decision saying, "The reasoning behind that is, basically, they need to move it to different parts of the country".
As fan, while I couldn't be more excited about Celebration Anaheim, I am slightly disappointed that we won't be a having a Celebration in 2014. That being said, I do understand and respect that Celebrations are a massive undertaking for everyone at Lucasfilm and having more than one year between events to plan makes everything easier on them and offers up more opportunities for great experiences.
The Orange County Convention Center is a beautiful building and an excellent host for Celebrations and I hope to see more events there in the future (in addition to seeing the event move around some.)
