For the last few months fandom has been operating under the assumption that production on Star Wars Episode VII would begin in January 2014. However, a new report from our friends at JediNews suggests that filming may beginning sooner. A lot sooner. A source is telling JediNews that filming will begin in August 2013 at Pinewood Studios in London. According to their report:
"Further to this we understand that the film has been in
pre-production at Pinewood Studios for three and a half months in
advance of an August 2013 shooting date. We hear they have block booked
the studios for 10 years and that construction of offices and
facilities on-site is underway. Also storage space is being located in
the local area."
While this is not totally impossible, it does seem unlikely, given how little we've heard regarding the film. We know that JJ Abrams is directing and some of the production crew, but there hasn't been a single casting announcement and only one seemingly legitimate rumor (Ryan Gosling and Zac Effron don't count!) Given what Kathleen Kennedy said during Celebration Europe this past weekend, it seems unlikely that they are ready to move into production (for example, she revealed that JJ Abrams is currently taking a brief vacation).
However, it is not completely implausible either. We know how secretive Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams have been in the past (Blue Harvest, anyone?) so perhaps the lack of news has been intentional to throw people off the scent of what is really going on. In addition, some fans have expressed concern that filming in January 2014 is too late to meet the expected May 2015 release date, without being rushed, and beginning production in August would give them considerably more time to finish the film without rushing.
Remember this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm, so take it with a grain of salt.
