Unidentified 'Solo' Actor Talks About the Infamous Directors Change

By: Dominic Jones

As much as Lucasfilm and Disney may want it to go away, the story that keeps following Solo: A Star Wars Story around is the infamous directors change that took place last June when Phil Lord and Chris Miller--who had been shooting since January 2017--left the project with just weeks left to go in shooting.  They were replaced shortly thereafter by Ron Howard.  While those involved haven't shied away from talking about it, the amount of speculation and debate about what happened sometimes appears to overshadow the movie itself, which opens in theaters in just under two months.  Fans are curious about who shot what, what changes were made, how the credits will look, and what was it like on set with Lord and Miller compared to Howard.

By: Dominic Jones

Back in June of 2017, fans thought that in May 2018 they would be seeing a Han Solo movie directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie).  Fast forward to now and the Han Solo movie (now titled Solo) is still coming out in May 2018 only now with Ron Howard as director.  In late June, Lucasfilm made the shocking decision to let go of Lord and Miller, fairly late into production, and bring in Howard to redo most of the movie.  Howard and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy spoke candidly about the change in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly's Anthony Breznican for the magazine's cover story about Solo.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Comment on Leaving 'Solo: A Star Wars Story'

Back in June, Star Wars fans (and the entertainment industry as a whole) was shocked to learn that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street) would no longer be directing the, then untitled, Han Solo movie.  Directors changes are not uncommon in Hollywood (see: Episode IX), but what made this one unique is that Lord and Miller had been shooting the film since January.  Since then, with Ron Howard having taken over Solo: A Star Wars Story, Lord and Miller have remained silent apart from a statement in the original press release.

Thandie Newton Comments On The 'Solo' Directors Change

By: Dominic Jones

The narrative surrounding the production of Solo: A Star Wars Story has been dominated by the directors switch that took place in late June, when Phil Lord and Chris Miller were let go from the project (after shooting for close to six months already) and Ron Howard was brought in to replace them.  The change was almost unheard of in Hollywood, and not something that most of the cast and crew had experienced before.

Woody Harrelson Comments on the Young Han Solo Film Director Change

By: Dominic Jones

It's safe to say things got pretty chaotic on the set of the young Han Solo film recently, culminating in the departure of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) and Ron Howard coming in to take over.  While the transition is certainly unusual, it sounds like at least one cast member has been taking things in stride.  Woody Harrelson spoke about the change in directors in a recent interview with Uproxx, saying, "Oh, you can relax, man – because obviously the Force is with us."

By: Dominic Jones

The news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller had left the young Han Solo film they had been working on since 2015, and shooting since January, and that would be replaced by Academy Award winner Ron Howard has dominated the Star Wars news cycle over the past week.  Ever since Lord and Miller's shocking dismissal was announced Tuesday night, there have been questions about what exactly went down.  While we'll likely never know all the exact details about what happened, it all seems to stem from disagreements between Lord and Miller and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan.

The Star Wars fan community is trying to come to terms with, and understand, what led to the decision to change directors on the upcoming untitled young Han Solo A Star Wars Story film.  Earlier tonight, Lucasfilm announced in a press release that "The untitled Han Solo film will move forward with a directorial change" and that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had exited the project due to "creative differences."  Directorial changes are not uncommon in Hollywood and happen on a semi-regular basis before film's go into production.  What makes this change so strange is that the Han Solo film had already been filming for close to six months.

Woody Harrelson Praises Han Solo Film Directors

By: Dominic Jones

The cast of the young Han Solo film currently in production has an impressive cast, with its many of its stars coming from some of the most acclaimed projects of recent memory.  Among that cast is Woody Harrelson (True Detective, The Hunger Games), who--in addition to shooting the Han Solo film--is currently promoting his upcoming film Wilson (which opens this Friday).  Harrelson sat down with Collider recently to talk about Wilson, and, of course, the topic of Star Wars came up.  Harrelson couldn't say much about the film's plot of his character (which is apparently a mentor figure in Han's life), however he did have some high praise for the film's directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

EW Spills Details About The Han Solo Anthology Film

By: Benjamin Hart

As you've probably heard, and seen, Entertainment Weekly revealed a ton of new information and photos from The Force Awakens yesterday in preparation for the release of their Fall movie preview issue tomorrow. Today they have shifted their focus to everyone's favorite scruffy looking Nerf herder, Han Solo, and his upcoming Anthology film. EW's Anthony Breznican spoke with Lawrence Kasdan, who's writing the film with his son Jon, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy who spilled some interesting details about the production so far and hinted at what we might see on the big screen on May 25, 2018.

First off, Kathleen Kennedy explains that the idea of Anthology films, specifically one about Han Solo, is one that dates back prior to the Disney acquisition in late 2012 and is something George Lucas himself approved prior to retiring from Lucasfilm:

“It was one of the first things he sat down to talk to me about: What would those movies be? That’s where we discussed not only reigniting the saga, but talking about the standalone, what has now become the anthology films.”

Further, they confirm that the production team aren't even close to casting anyone yet, but Kennedy says that Han will be in his "high teens, low 20s" in the film and, although Chewbacca is a given, hints the likes of Lando Calrissian, Jabba the Hutt and Greedo may appear. She also expresses a desire to tell an important story with Han while still keeping some of the mysteries of the character intact:

“There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered... I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love."

In addition, Kennedy briefly spoke about the third Anthology film that was slated to be directed by Josh Trank prior to him leaving the project. She assures EW that, while they haven't hired a new director yet, the film is still on the way:

“It’s still one of the stories that we absolutely want to tell. There is a lot of innovative technology in and around what it is we’re doing with that story, so for a lot of reasons, we were comfortable postponing that. But we’re definitely still developing it.”

Christopher Miller Talks The Han Solo Anthology Film

By: Benjamin Hart

While we have much to look forward to in the next few months, let's take a moment to look far into the future; May 25th, 2018 to be exact. That's when the Han Solo Anthology film will hit theaters, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan.

Christopher Miller recently spoke with IGN about the film, along with several other of his ongoing projects. First off Miller says it is a "childhood dream" for both himself and Phil Lord to be working on the film and called working with Kasdan an "amazing experience". He then went on to explain how the duo are approaching the monumental task of directing a Star Wars film:

"It’s a huge pressure. We always try and find something that's gonna make us... give a fire to our bellies and do a really good job. And this feels like there’s a lot of pressure to not screw this up. So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you're just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character."

He also talked a bit about his admiration for Han Solo:

"I could talk to you for a day about why he is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy... Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny, he’s off the cuff… When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created."

Be sure to head over to IGN to read the full interview!

Disney Blog Teases Connection Between Han Solo Film and Third Anthology Film

Everyone is still buzzing over the awesome news that The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be directing a Han Solo Anthology movie due for release on May 25th, 2018.  While this will be the second Star Wars: Anthology film, the first being 2016's Rogue One, there are signs pointing to the fact that it is not the same film that Josh Trank was working on before he left the project earlier this year.  The Hollywood Reporter said as much when they broke the Lord/Miller/Solo news earlier and now an official Disney Blog seems to be suggesting as much as well.

When reporting today's news, the Disney Insider blog teased more Star Wars news coming soon, specifically at this week's San Diego Comic Con and next month's D23 Expo.  The blog states that,

"With the big Star Wars presentation at this year’s San Diego Comic Con scheduled for Friday night and the D23 Expo just around the corner (in August), expect more details (like how this relates to the Star Wars Anthology film that Fantastic Four director Josh Trank recently left) soon."

All this suggests that Tranks departure caused the powers that be at Lucasfilm to re-organize their schedule.  My guess is that they had Lord and Miller all but signed on when Trank left, and once they finalized their deal they decided to move forward with this project first instead of trying to find a new director to take on the other film.  Trank had been working with the Star Wars team for over a year when he quit, so re-organizing the film to fit a new director's vision (not to mention finding said director) may have been difficult given the time restraints.  Instead they can move forward with a script and directors who are fully committed to the same vision and can pull off the film in time for it's May 25th, 2018 release date.

BREAKING: Christopher Miller & Phil Lord To Direct Han Solo Anthology Film

By: Ciaran Duggan

A few moments ago, an article was posted up on StarWars.com, which unveiled that the dynamic duo, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, will direct a new Han Solo anthology film. Miller and Lord have showcased that they are some of the best directors in the business, as conveyed through their credits in blockbuster hits, such as The LEGO Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, along with both 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. Now, they get to add a highly anticipated Star Wars spin-off film to the mix too.

In collaboration with Miller and Lord, two distinguished writers have been appointed by LucasFilm. Lawrence Kasdan, best known for Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Big Chill and co-writer for the screenplays, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi & The Force Awakens has consented to working with the directors on this new film, along with his son, Jon Kasdan. Furthermore, Lawrence Kasdan will act as executive producer, as well as Jason McGatlin. Kathleen Kennedy and Will Allegra have also agreed to work in league with Kasdan and McGatlin, as producers of the film. Further to the press release, a brief synopsis of the film has been released:

The story focuses on how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the Cantina at Mos Eisely.

The film’s release date has been scheduled for May 25, 2018.
