The SWU Podcast LIVE | 15/7/16

Kickin' It Star Wars Style

Not long after a Star Wars episode of Phineas and Ferb Disney gives us another special from a galaxy far, far away. Kickin' It will be airing their Star Wars episode this Monday, 7/6c on Dinsey XD. Kickin' It follows a karate instructor and his students as they go through some crazy situations that usually end with a martial arts battle. Leo Howard, who plays one of the main characters Jack, got his black belt at an early age and became a member of Sideswipe which is an acrobatic martial arts performance team. The plot for the episode is that Jack dreams he is in the Star Wars galaxy and encounters various characters like Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, C-3PO, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. With Leo's background and the fact he will be a jedi, I believe we should see some pretty awesome lightsaber fight scenes. Rumor: Michael Fassbender, Adam Driver, and Hugo Weaving are being considered for Episode VII

The Hollywood Reporter released an article giving three more names to the rumor of potential actors for Episode VII. Micheal Fassbender from X-Men: First Class, Adam Driver from Girls, and Hugo Weaving from Captain America: The First Avenger. 


There were also some new rumors for changes in the script. "Arndt is said to have focused on the offspring of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), with the original trilogy heroes taking on supporting roles. Abrams, however, wanted Episode VII to focus on the classic trio of characters, so audiences could have one more chance to enjoy them before a fitting send-off. The new characters, the offspring, will now be in supporting roles, according to these sources, and take center stage in Episode VIII and IX. Some characters have disappeared from the Arndt script and new ones are being drafted."

And a role originally meant for a 20 year old male is being rewritten for a 40 year old. The artical also states "The latest bit to surface this week is that Abrams and Lucasfilm are now searching for a 20-something female actress who is either of mixed race or black. The rumor is that Obi-Wan Kenobi had a daughter or granddaughter."

Mythbusters Star Wars Special

The new season of Mythbusters came out starting with an episode all about Star Wars myths. It began with they're own version of the Star Wars opening crawl. They then introduced the 501st and told the viewers a bit about them. After that it was on to the myths!

The first myth they took on was from the scene in Star Wars: A New Hope when Luke rescues Leia and they swing across the chasim. Jamie Hyneaman and Adam Savage broke it down into three parts and took them on individually before trying to recreate the scene.

Part 1: Could someone throw a grappling hook from the same distance and angle to have it catch and hold? After many tries Jamie was able to do so proving you could, but getting it on the first try like in the movie? Probably not.

Part 2: Could you support yourself from a waist belt? After trying a small test to see, it was concluded that in a life death situation you could but it would be painful and not the first choice.

Part 3: Could you swing while holding someone else's weight? This was shown to work in their smaller test so it was on to recreate the scene.

While doing the full blown version Jaime opted out of the waist belt and used a standard harness instead. Sophia Bush was introduced as the one to play the part of Princess Leia. With costumes on and stormtroopers ready to fire they recreated the swing and made it safely across. Afterwards they decided that this myth was plausible.

Myth two was from a scene in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi where the ewoks used tree logs to smash an AT-ST. After smashing a car and an armored truck Tori, Kari, and Grant concluded this myth was plausible. 

The third myth was from the scene in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back were Han Solo puts Luke Sywalker into a tauntaun to keep warm. After Adam made a life size tauntaun and Jamie found the perfect recipe for tauntaun guts it was into the freezer.  Monitoring a special dummy that can emulate a realistic body heat reactions Adam and Jamie were surprised by the results and decided that this myth was plausible.

This January not only starts a new year but also a new season of the show MythBusters. For those who aren't familiar with the show, MythBusters is a television program on the Discovery Channel. They, you guessed it, bust myths. The group takes popular myths and put them to the test to see if they are fact or fiction by using science and experiments. And to start off this new season the first episode is dedicated to myths straight from Star Wars. This is something you do not want to miss!

A Working Lightsaber?

Cue the dramatic music and get ready to do some fancy foot work. Are we close to making a real working lightsaber?

Scientists from Harvard and MIT were able to make light turn into molecules, meaning that a working lightsaber was one step closer to being a reality. Harvard Professor Mikhail Lukin made the comparison to the ficticious weapon. "It's not an in-apt analogy to compare this to lightsabers."

This experiment took place using multiple tables of equipment. On the first sat a vacuum chamber. A meter-wide vessel that is hooked up to a series of pumps to remove air from the inside. The second table had the optical equipment. These were used to control the laser beams and to detect the results during the experiment. On the third and largest table, being around 4 meters long, was a mix of lasers which were needed for the different parts of the experiment.

Overall, these elements together weighed ruffly a ton. Not exactly something you can clip to your belt and bring with you to save the galaxy.

To read how the experiment worked you can follow the link below. The result of the experiment is two different antennae of electrons that affects each other. The second can not pass through until the first has left the spot. These photonic molecules only exist for a quick moment in an area that is a fraction of a millimeter long. This area is also colder than outer space and enclosed in a metal container.

"When these photons interact with each other, they're pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what's happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies," Lukin stated.

Although we have made a step closer to the possibility of a real lightsaber we still have a far way to go. "I don't know what to say. The lightsaber is fictitious," says the Harvard postdoc and first author on the paper about the experiment, Ofer Firstenberg. "We don't know what the physics is behind a lightsaber. I don't know how George Lucas did it."

Until then I guess we'll just have to be content with dueling our friends and family with the lightsaber toys.

The SWU at Granite State Comic Con 2013

Today was the second and last day of the annual Granite State Comic Con in Manchester, New Hampshire. Although there was not any major Star Wars news being released the SWU staff were still keeping busy. Throughout the day we were able to get photos of some epic cosplayers from New England. In this article we'll show you the cool Star Wars cosplays. You can find photos of all the other sweet cosplays we came across HERE.

In the photo above we see non other than Jabba the Hut. The 501st brought this big green guy for people to take photos next to.

Here we see a zombie storm trooper and a brave little ewok. 

These were very good cosplays of a scout trooper and Jaine Solo. 

With a costum painted mask this Vader was very cool to look at.

It's not often you see a TIE pilot and a jawa together.

A great Asajj Ventress cosplay we ran into.

This father and daughter were having a great time cosplaying as Darth Vader and Padme.

Star Wars Episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

On this special holiday episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition the team built a house for the Zdroj family. Living in Smithville, Texas, the chosen family lost their home to the Bastrop County Complex fire during the fall of 2011. The mother of the family is a volunteer firefighter and was off fighting the blazes to save the fire station as her home burnt down.

After being surprised that they were chosen, they showed the design team around their current residence. The two younger boys, Ashron and Raistlin, shared about their and their father's love for Star Wars to some of the designers. Then Zdroj family was sent to their first vacation location in New York City.

Once they were done in New York City, they headed to San Frencisco where they visited The Letterman Digital Arts Center.  There they saw some Star Wars props and costumes used in the movies. They even got to dance in front of a blue screen making them appear next to a digital C-3PO. The family was given a surprise gift to bring home before leaving to head back to see the new house. During the family's vacation,  design team member Johnny was creating a unique Star Wars themed play room for the boys and father.

We watch as, with a little help from Darth Vader and some storm troopers, the plans for the room are recovered from other design team members who took them.

To gain access to the hidden room you must climb up a ladder in the boys' room. The room is styled after a Star Wars ship.

With spaces shaped like escape pods, a wooden board shaped like the Dejarik game, and a flat screen tv the boys are ready to go to a galaxy far far away. The last thing to do is open the gift from The Letterman Digital Arts Center in which they got a sculpture of Han Solo in carbonite.

So welcome home Zdroj family and may the Force be with you!
