2015 is just around the corner and with it comes the return of Star Wars comics to Marvel.  But before the first book in this new era hits shelves on January 14th, it's worth taking sometime to celebrate the twenty year legacy that Dark Horse Comics left on Star Wars.  Dark Horse is currently holding a Farewell Star Wars sale, where all digital comics are 50% off and you can buy the entire run of comics for just $300.  That's twenty years of comics covering from 25,000 years before The Phantom Menace to 130 years after Return of the Jedi!

As excited as I am about the fresh start to Star Wars comics and everything Marvel has to offer, I can't help but feel sad about the end of a great era.  And Dark Horse is going out with big final gesture to the fans that is representational of their entire run on Star Wars.

Newsarama: Cancelled 'Clone Wars' Series Finale Will Be Adapted Into Comics

By Chris Seekell

The established comic book news website Newsarama has just published an exclusive interview with Lucasfilm announcing the release of a Dark Horse comic book series based on cancelled episodes of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars series. The article states the following information:

"Lucasfilm has told us the finale to Star Wars: The Clone Wars is being told as a comic launching this May. This doesn’t preclude the fully produced episodes from still airing somehow, but does let fans jump right to the ending and the unproduced final arc.

In this last year of Lucasfilm’s epic decades-long partnership with Dark Horse Comics, the Oregon-based publisher will be releasing a four-part limited series titled Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir that will adapt the screenplays for what would have been the series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Written by seasoned Star Wars comics scribe (and former editor) Jeremy Barlow with an artist to be announced, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir sees the full-scale return of Darth Maul to the Star Wars universe and into a head-to-head battle with his former master Darth Sidious – aka, the Emperor. Barlow promises to fully delve into the world of Dathomir, as well as some of its inhabitants like Nightbrothers and even a new character called Brother Viscus. Barlow spoke exclusively to Newsarama in our “Galaxy Far Away” Star Wars column."

The article goes on to interview comic writer Jeremy Barlow. You can read it here.

Ever since the announcement that the Clone Wars series would conclude with several Season 6 arcs to be released as "Bonus Content", fans have speculated about whether we would ever see the rumored finale arc that would allegedly tie the series into Revenge of the Sith. Now, it seems we have our answer.

UPDATE: Since the release of the article, multiple LFL employees have stated on Twitter that the comics will only adapt the finale of the Darth Maul storyline, and not the series finale. Newsarama is expected to change the wording of their story.

'Star Wars: Rebel Heist' Mini Series Announced

By: Dominic Jones

It's two days after Christmas and Star Wars is still giving us new presents.  Dark Horse Comics announced today a new mini series called Star Wars: Rebel Heist written by Matt Kindt.  The series is set in the original trilogy era and will feature Han Solo.  The announcement came from Comic Book Resources, who also had an exclusive interview with Kindt where he discussed some of the challenges of writing a Star Wars series,

Yeah, that was why it was kind of easy for me to be like, "No, I'm too busy." It's a combination of all the worst things I hate about properties that I don't own. [Laughs] A rabid fanbase, huge amounts of continuity, all this history. As much as I love it, I'm not steeped in Star Wars mythology. Since I was a kid, I was like, "If it didn't happen in the movies, it didn't happen." Other than the movies, that's what I draw from. This was definitely intimidating, and if this idea hadn't literally dropped in my lap, I wouldn't have done it.

Honestly, the idea came from my reverence for those characters. I guess I was inspired by the intimidation factor of those characters. I thought, "How great would it be to do a series where you get to see Han Solo from a regular dude's point of view?" Which is basically my point of view! What if I got to tag along with Han Solo, and we had to do some mission for the rebellion? What would that be like? I thought something like that would be awesome.

So that was the springboard. It would be cool to have four core characters, and each issue would play with that idea -- Princess Leia and a spy character who she teams up with, but it's all from the point of view of the character Princess Leia teams up with. Viewing Princess Leia, viewing Han Solo, viewing Chewbacca, viewing Luke through the guise of a normal dude. Han Solo is like the coolest character ever, so it was fun to write that, where this guy's sort of starstruck by him -- just like I would be. Then they've got this mission to do, and doing a real mission where everything's on the line, and your life is in danger -- by the end of that issue, Han Solo's not so cool anymore. This guy's scared out of his mind. Han Solo's kind of reckless.

That was my way in, almost viewing those characters in a childlike way, like I did when I was a kid, and you look up to Han Solo as the coolest. It was easy to write after that.

Dark Horse to Adapt Geore Lucas' Original Star Wars Script

By: Dominic Jones

This one's not an April Fools Day joke, folks.  Dark Horse announced during their Wonder Con panel that they will be releasing an 8-issue comic adaption of George Lucas' original 1974 script for Star Wars.  The series, titled The Star Wars, will feature Anikin Starkiller as the hero, as well as an aged General Luke Skywalker, a helmet-less Darth Vader and an alien Han Solo.  For the look of the series, artist Mike Mayhew drew upon classic Ralph McQuarrie concept art from the production of the original film.  The series is being written by Jonathan Rinzler, the author of the Making Of Series of books, which chronicle the behind the scenes work that went into the Original Trilogy.  The Star Wars is expected to debut in September.

The series promises to be an intriguing look into what our favorite franchise could have been and where some of the beloved and iconic moments, characters, and items came from.  With the main focus of Lucasfilm currently being primarily on moving forward, it's great to see Dark Horse step up and take us back to a time before Star Wars was what it is today.  Check out page 1 from the series above.

Check out some concept art from the series over at Bleeding Cool.

LUCASFILM AND DARK HORSE ANNOUNCE
THE BIGGEST EVENT IN THE HISTORY OF
STAR WARS COMICS!

George Lucas’s original-draft screenplay for The Star Wars to be adapted by J. W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew!

APRIL 1, MILWAUKIE, OR–It’s no April Fools’ prank! Dark Horse is honored to announce a dream project: working with J.W. Rinzler, executive editor at LucasBooks, and artist Mike Mayhew (Avengers) to adapt the rough-draft original screenplay which spawned the biggest franchise in film history!

Three years before his 1977 film, George Lucas put down on paper his first story set in a galaxy far, far away—a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, “lazer swords,” romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights. The screenplay was titled The Star Wars!

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” said longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

“While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft for The Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing,” said writer J.W. Rinzler. “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

Originally conceived in 1974, The Star Wars has been the subject of rumor and legend in the fan community throughout the history of the galaxy far, far away. Now, Lucas has seen fit to grant Dark Horse the right to adapt this fabled story into an eight-issue comic series launching in September!
