Rumor: Obi-Wan Kenobi Stand Alone Movie To Begin Filming Spring 2019 For December 2020 Release

It is an exciting time to be a Star Wars.  Not only is Solo: A Star Wars Story hitting theaters this month, there's Episode IX next year, a new trilogy from The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson in the works, and a new series of films in development from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss.   And now on top of all that, it seems the long rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi stand alone film is finally going to happen.

The good folks over at Fantha Tracks are reporting that the Obi-Wan film is slated to begin filming in Spring of 2019 and will hit theaters in December 2020.  In addition, "studio based pre-production" has already begun on the film at Pinewood Studios in London.  Many members on the crew who worked on previous Star Wars movies have reportedly had their contracts extended beyond Episode IX, with work expected to begin on the Obi-Wan film in earnest in October of this year to prepare for the shoot that would begin a few months later.

No further details about cast or crew are reported.  However, if the film is this far along in pre-production then it presumably has a director.  The most likely candidate right now is Stephen Daldry, who was reported as being in talks to take on the project in August 2017.  It has been on quiet on that front since then, but some follow up reports at the time suggested that the talks were still relatively early and could still have fallen through.

As for who will play Obi-Wan, there is still no news about that either.  Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-Wan in the prequels and reprised the role for a vocal cameo in The Force Awakens, has said on numerous occasions that he would be interested in doing a Kenobi stand alone film if he were asked.  The most recent time being after his win at the 2018 Golden Globes, when he told reporters, "There’s a lot of talk, and I’d be happy to play him again, but I don’t know anything more than you do."

An Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, especially one starring Ewan McGregor, is something that a lot of fans have been hoping for.  Lucasfilm has shown a definite interest in this new era of Star Wars in revisiting classic characters for new adventures outside the main saga.  Obviously there's Solo hitting theaters next month, but there was a Boba Fett film in development at one point with Josh Trank attached to direct before he left the project in 2015.  There have also been reports of a Jabba the Hutt film and a Yoda film being considered by the company.

With the new series of films that Rian Johnson and David Benioff and DB Weiss are working on being set outside the main Skywalker saga, it might be nice to revisit Obi-Wan one more time before the saga shifts to (mostly) uncharted territories.

As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
