'The Last Jedi' Has Second Highest Christmas Day Box Office Gross of All Time

Star Wars continues to dominate the box office this Holiday season as The Last Jedi achieved the second highest box office returns ever for Christmas Day yesterday, according to Variety, pulling in $32 Million on the 25th alone.  The only film with a higher Christmas Day gross?  Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 with $49.3 million.  Over the Christmas weekend, The Last Jedi pulled in over $100 million at the domestic box office and another $75.1 million in International markets.  The film is expected to cross $800 million worldwide very soon.

The Last Jedi faced slightly more competition this year, than The Force Awakens or Rogue One did in the last two years, with both Sony (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Universal (Pitch Perfect 3) releasing high profile films this weekend.  While neither film even came close to topping The Last Jedi, they should be kept in mind when comparing its results to its predecessors, who were basically unopposed over their first few weekends.

While some have raised concerns of The Last Jedi surprising decline in ticket sale between its first two weekends, a strong showing over Christmas seems to have put the film back on track.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Last Jedi is still expected to gross $1.6 Billion worldwide by the end of its run (which would put it around 4th or 5th all time), with about $750-800 million of that coming from the domestic box office.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is in theaters now!
