Leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in ten days, there are many questions that fans are asking about the film. But perhaps none more so than will we see the reunion of long lost space siblings Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa? Following The Force Awakens fans would have been asking this question anyways, but it took on extra meaning after Carrie Fisher unexpectedly passed away last year. And it looks like fans may get their wish to Luke and Leia together on screen one more time.
The promotion of the film has teased the notion, but no one was willing to confirm whether or not it would happen. However, a new interview with writer/director Rian Johnson did with Syfy Wire seems to confirm that the reunion will happen. When asked about what it was like shooting a Star Wars movie, Johnson replied,
"We'd very often turn to each other on set and say, 'This feels like the
biggest independent movie at all time,' which means the process of it
felt very intimate. It didn't feel like something different; it felt
like what we do. But then once or twice a day, you'd look around and
say, 'And we're filming Luke and Leia in the Millennium Falcon' or we'd
say, 'That's C-3PO in the shot!' So, 98% was a wonderful, familiar
process and 2% terrifying, "We're making Star Wars!" which was a good balance."
The image of Luke and Leia on the Millennium Falcon was recently used as a cover for an issue of Entertainment Weekly. While the specific cover is almost certainly a composite of several promotional images, it does appear as though it depicts an actual scene in the movie.
Interestingly, when asked by EW's Anthony Breznican about this cover, Johnson said, "It’s nice seeing them on the cover though. Even if all we have is that."
So, we have to conflicting statements from Johnson. One that says Luke and Leia do reunite and one that implies they don't. Which begs the question, which is true?
At the time of the EW cover being unveiled, it was noted that the caption at the top of the image says, "Will Luke & Leia Reunite?" This caused some fans to argue that Lucasfilm and Disney marketing would not allow this on the cover if it weren't true. While I generally agree with that sentiment, I can also see a situation where something like that slipped through the cracks and the characters don't reunite. But given how meticulously planned out the marketing for these films is, the case for the caption teasing something that will actually happen seems pretty strong.
Now, Johnson's comment to Syfy Wire could be interpreted as him simply listing a hypothetical scene that would be cool to shoot, but that's a flimsy argument at best. Johnson definitely makes it seem like he is listing cool things that he actually got to do. Granted, his next comment of "That's C-3PO in the shot!" is much more generic, but we know from the trailers and TV spots that that is something which definitely happened.
This answer from Johnson is likely as close to a confirmation as we're going to get until the film hits theaters next week. It seems unlikely that the reunion (assuming it happens) will be featured in any more TV spots, trailers, or clips. The seemingly nonchalant way that he confirmed it does leave a little room for doubt that he may be speaking in hypotheticals, but (as we've gone over) that seems unlikely.
We'll find out one way or another on December 15th!
