One of the characters I'm most interested in seeing explored more in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. As the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa (formerly known as Ben Solo), he is clearly tied in deeply with Star Wars lore but he is also a key player in the future. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson discussed how Kylo is a more relatable villain than we've seen in Star Wars before, making him and interesting counterpoint to Daisy Ridley's Rey.
Johnson compared Kylo to Darth Vader in the Original Trilogy, hinting that there is some deeper connection between the protagonists of the Sequel Trilogy than it initially appeared. Johnson said,
"In the originals you project entirely onto Luke, while Vader is the
scary other — he’s the minotaur. The fascinating thing about Kylo and
Rey is that they’re two sides of something. We can all relate to Kylo:
to that anger of being in the turmoil of adolescence and figuring out
who he’s going to be as a man; dealing with anger and wanting to
separate from his family. He’s not Vader — at least, he’s not Vader yet — and that’s something I really wanted to get into."
We never really got a chance to explore how Kylo felt about what went down on Starkiller Base at the end of The Force Awakens. The last time we see him, he is laying beaten in the snow after his duel with Rey, and we're told that Hux will go and pick him up to bring him to Snoke. It will be interesting to see how killing his father and then losing to Rey has effected him. Clearly, he thought murdering Han Solo would bring him something but it's not clear whether he liked what he felt (if he felt anything at all).
In the interview with Empire, Johnson also (briefly) addresses Snoke's role in the upcoming film, reiterating what he told Entertainment Weekly a few weeks ago. Johson said of Snoke, "I wasn't interested in explaining where he came from or telling his history, except where it serves this story."
Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi hits theaters on December

Ridley, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Kelly
Marie Tran, Laura Dern, Benicio Del Toro, and Lupita Nyong'o.
