By Ciaran Duggan,

The first issue of the Marvel Comics miniseries Shattered Empire was published on this day back in 2015.

The series is set between the event of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and was written by Greg Rucka.

This was the first comic series in the new Star Wars canon to journey of new heroes after the end of Return of the Jedi  - and the front cover illustrates as much.

Three more issues were published in the four-part Star Wars comic book miniseries, with the climactic publication released on October 21, 2015.

Greg Rucka originally pitched a comic featuring Lando Calrissian with characters from his book Smuggler's Run: A Han Solo and Chewbacca Adventure (which had been released five days earlier).

The final scene from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Phil Noto's promotional art recreating the final shot of Return of the Jedi was shown at Celebration Anaheim and Rucka thought he would be "killed" when readers learned the original trilogy's heroes were not the focus.

He then wrote a new pitch with his new heroes teaming up with Poe Dameron's parents.
