By Ciaran Duggan,

William Hootkins, who played Jek Tono Porkins in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, was born on this day back in 1948.

Porkins was a male human trader and pilot from Bestine. He decided to abandon his homeworld after the Galactic Empire moved in and developed a new military base there, and he ended up joining the Alliance to Restore the Republic.

The pilot flew an X-wing starfighter and fought in the Battle of Yavin. During the battle he ignored the advice of Biggs Darklighter, another Rebel pilot, to eject from the craft and died almost instantly by ground fire from Imperial forces.

The American screen actor appeared in two other Lucasfilm productions. One of these projects  was 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark, where he portrayed Major Eaton alongside fellow Star Wars actor Harrison Ford.

Hootkins is also remembered for his role as Gotham City police lieutenant Max Eckharrt in the 1989 film Batman, which featured Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent.

The 57-year-old died of pancreatic cancer in Santa Monic, California on October 23, 2005.
