By Ciaran Duggan,

John Wayne, who provided the voice of Imperial spy Garindan in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, passed away on this day in 1979.

The squeaky voice of the shady figure is a manipulated recording of John Wayne, taken from archival audio.

The actor's appearance in A New Hope would be his last role in any film before his died at the age of 72.

The voice for Garindan was later reused in the Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game and the compilation re-release, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga

Mr. Wayne was one of the stalwart film stars of his generation. He worked as an actor, director and producer for a wide number of iconic films.

Academy Award winning performance in 'True Grit' (1969)
An Academy Award-winner for True Grit (1969), he became personified to national and global audiences alike for the American nation's frontier.

He starred in a number of well-known Western films including Red River (1948) The Searchers (1956), Rio Bravo (1959), The Longest Day (1962) and The Shootist
