By Ciaran Duggan,

Star Wars: A New Hope won six Oscars at the 50th Academy Awards on this day in 1978.

It's fair to say that the sci-fi box office hit took the Academy by storm with the film being nominated for a whopping 10 Oscars.

The six categories were:
  • Best Visual Effects
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Production Design
  • Best Sound Mixing
Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO presented Benjamin Burtt Jr. with the Special Achievement Award for Best Sound Editing in Star Wars.

The blockbuster movie was also nominated in four other categories: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay - but didn't win any awards in these categories.

Will we ever see a repeat of this feat by a Star Wars film again? Let us know in the comments below.
