2018 will be Celebration-less. While we're all getting excited for the upcoming Star Wars Celebration in April in Orlando, the organizers are already looking ahead to the next convention. Lucasfilm and ReedPop announced today that the next Star Wars Celebration will take place some time in 2019. There have been three Celebrations in the last three years, making 2018 the first year since 2014 without a Star Wars Celebration. In the past, Celebrations took place every 2-3 years, and it was only recently that they began to become yearly.
According to the official Celebration website,
"Celebration is the official, definitive Star Wars event, with
entertainment, interactive experiences and exclusives that can only be
found at this Lucasfilm production. They are the ultimate community fan
gathering as well, and friends will want to start planning to be
together again to commemorate everyone’s favorite saga. The next
official Celebration is slated for a location and date soon-to-be
announced, in 2019."
Celebrations have typically been a place where fans have gotten their first look at new Star Wars films and TV shows. From 1999-2005 the conventions served as the final promotional stop for the prequel trilogy. Then from 2007-2012 Star Wars: The Clone Wars was the star of the show. The from 2013-now the new films have taken the center stage, giving fans exclusive looks at what's to come. With no Celebration in 2018, it seems the Han Solo film won't get the Celebration treatment (and seeing as the film hits theaters in May, it won't get the San Diego Comic Con treatment either).
As for when the dates of the next Celebration will be announced, the closing ceremonies of Celebration Orlando next month seems like a strong potential. With the exception of this year's event (which was announced prior the previous Celebration in London), all the closing ceremonies since 2012 have featured the announcement of the next Celebration.
Star Wars Celebration Orlando takes place from April 13th-16th at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Single day tickets are still available.
