By Ciaran Duggan,

John Williams finished his soundtrack recording session to the score for Star Wars: A New Hope on this day in 1977.

The legendary film composer has a huge resume of high-quality movie scores to his name including Jaws, E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Harry Potter (I - III), Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and the other six Star Wars films (inc. The Force Awakens).

John Williams' Star Wars score recorded over eight sessions at the former Anvil Studios in England from March 5 - 16, 1977.

The soundtrack was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra with Williams himself conducting.

Williams' composition introduced a wide variety of orchestral music, ranging from the rousing main title to the poignant Twin Suns and the swinging space jazz played in the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Williams would later go on to win an Oscar for Best Original Score on Star Wars: A New Hope.

The legacy of Williams' evocative orchestral piece remains ever present today as his work served to inspire a new generation of film scores.
