Rian Johnson was announced as the director of Episode VIII on this day in 2015.

The news dropped on StarWars.com and a provisional release date for 'The Last Jedi' was publicised as well.

The film release date has since changed from May 2017 to a December 2017 release.

In addition to the Rian Johnson news the title of the first anthology film was made public.



The news of the title - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - broke on this day and whetted fans appetite for the first of what is set to be many anthology movies.
