Rumor: Behind the Scenes Details About Snoke in 'Episode VIII'

One of the biggest mysteries in the sequel trilogy is Supreme Leader Snoke.  Portrayed by Andy Serkis through motion capture, he appeared in only a few scenes in The Force Awakens, and yet he has been the subject of much speculation.  Who is he?  What are his goals?  What connections may he have to the past? These are just some of the questions that exist.  And while we may not know the answers, we do know he's back for next year's Episode VIII and our friends over at MakingStarWars.net have some details about the behind the scenes of creating Snoke for Episode VIII and how it differs from The Force Awakens where he was entirely CGI.

These are not major plot spoilers, they're mostly just behind the scenes information.  But if you are trying to avoid all Episode VIII spoilers then stop reading now.  This is you SPOILER ALERT!

"For Star Wars: Episode VIII it appears, at least in part, that Snoke will not be a character generated in a computer. Instead he will be a huge puppet around seven to eight feet tall, taking several people to operate and a man inside a suit to make him walk. Stylistically, it seems as if Snoke may be CGI generated for the holographic communication sequences, but when he has scenes in Episode VIII next to real flesh-and-blood humans like Kylo Ren he will be a practical puppet with facial features operated by the crew."

They also had a few more details about his appearance,
"His arms alone give off the impression he is not exactly human as they are unnaturally long and unsettling. His appearance is identical to what we saw in the holograms but there’s apparently a “real” Snoke in the next instalment of the Skywalker saga."

It will be interesting to see them use a puppet to bring to life a character that was entirely CGI in the previous film.  Likely some CGI will be used to enhance his facial features, similar to what was done on Unkar Plutt in The Force Awakens.  It will also be interesting to see how much action Snoke actually sees in Episode VIII. Will he do more than just walking and talking?  Could he do some fighting?  We'll find out in just over a year's time!

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

Star Wars Episode VIII hits theatres on December 15th, 2017.  It's written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley, Mark Hamill, and Adam Driver.
