The director of Rogue One: A Star Wars, Gareth Edwards appeared on the French TV show Quotidien and spoke about the film. Edwards spoke about his career and fandom, but he also touched on some aspects of the film and confirmed a couple of rumors about how the film opens and dodged a few questions about about appearances by classic characters in Rogue One. You can watch the interview in French below (Edwards doesn't speak French, but his answers are dubbed),
Edwards was asked about how the film opens and he confirmed there would be no opening crawl, saying,
Q: We all know the opening crawl. Will we see this crawl at the beginning of Rogue One?
A: There is no opening crawl. But we have a prologue at the beginning of our movie that's set like 15 years before the actual film begins and that's our set up for our film. Our film comes from the text of Star Wars and so if we keep putting text it might go on forever, which maybe is not a bad thing, but as a stand alone movie they wanted to differentiate it from the rest of the saga.
Q: Was that not frustrating?
A: When I first heard the crawl might be gone, I was like "Aww". But the more we work on Star Wars the more the honeymoon goes away and the more you try to make as different as possible. Your temptation as a film maker is to try and take all the characters and put them all in your movie and then you have a 10 hour film so you have to start being selective. You're like ok these are the people and the characters that are required for our particular story. And that's the hardest part of making a film is letting go because there's too much, the universe is too rich. So many possibillities. And it's difficult as a fan to limit yourself.

He was also asked several yes or no questions about the film,
Q: Will there be Jedi?
A: Technically yes.
Q: Will there be lightsabers?
A: Darth Vader has one.
Q: Luke Skywalker?
A: No
Q: Will we see Princess Leia?
A: I don't want to ruin it
Q: R2D2?
A: I don't want to ruin it
A: Technically yes.
Q: Will there be lightsabers?

It's very interesting that Edwards will flat out deny Luke Skywalker being in the film, but won't deny Leia and R2 being in the film. It would make sense for them to be there at the end. And with all the talk about digitally recreating Tarkin, it wouldn't be much of a stretch for them to do the same with 1977 Carrie Fisher.
As for the crawl not being there, I'm not a fan. I'd much rather see all Star Wars films open with a crawl, but it doesn't appear that Lucasfilm agrees. That being said, I understand why it might be hard for them to have a crawl and open on a scene that's set 15 years before the rest of the film (but I bet they could have done it!)
