Last night, Lucasfilm shocked and thrilled Star Wars fan with the news that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke had been cast to star in the upcoming Han Solo A Star Wars Story film. Clarke will be starring alongside Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, as well as Chewbacca, when the film hits theaters in 2018. When the news was announced, Variety's Justin Kroll was able to offer some insight into how this casting came to be.
Apparently Clarke, like Glover and Ehrenreich, went through months of screen testing before ultimately being cast. Kroll reports that there were two groups of actresses being considered for the role. Zoe Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), Tessa Thompson (Selma), and Naomi Scott (The Martian), who were all reported as being in contention for the part back in October, were part of one group testing for the role, while Clarke, Adria Arjona (Emerald City), Kiersey Clemons (Dope), and Jessica Henwick (who plays Jess Pava in The Force Awakens, which would have made things interesting) were part of another group.
Ultimately, Clarke was chosen for the part. For fans wondering how Clarke's Game of Thrones commitments might impact the filming of Star Wars, Kroll reports that there shouldn't be any issues. Filming on the seventh season of Game of Thrones is slated to wrap up at the end of the year, while filming on the Han Solo film is slated to begin early next year.
