Entertainment Weekly Confirms Josh Trank Was Working on a Boba Fett Film

The hiring and subsequent departure of Josh Trank from a Star Wars stand alone film is one of the odder moments of the new era of Lucasfilm.  The Chronicle director was announced as the director of the second stand alone film in June 2014, he then left the project to pursue other "original creative opportunities" in May 2015.  Throw in a cancelled appearance at Star Wars Celebration and some crazy rumors about his time filming Fantastic Four for Fox, and nobody is really sure what exactly happened there.

Very little was known about Trank's project, until recently.  In a story about the planning new Star Wars films beyond 2019 (though none of those films were announced), Entertainment Weekly revealed that Trank was indeed working on a Boba Fett film.  This confirms a long standing rumor that a Fett film has been in the works at Lucasfilm for some time, though there is no confirmation if the company is still pursuing the project.  They also report that Lucasfilm had prepared a teaser for  fans at Celebration Anaheim in April 2015.

Trank's Boba Fett film was ultimately replaced on the Star Wars film slate with the upcoming Han Solo film from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

As for what else is to come from Lucasfilm down the line, Lucasfilm president and Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy is not ready to say just yet.  Though she did tell EW,
“There are [possible movies] that we have been talking a lot about.  But we are planning to sit down in January, since we will have had The Force Awakens released, now Rogue One, and we’ve finished shooting Episode VIII. We have enough information where we can step back a little bit and say, What are we doing? What do we feel is exciting? And what are some of the things we want to explore?”

She also addressed the possibility of nothing but stand alone films following the released of Episode IX, perhaps taking the Marvel approach to Star Wars.  Again, Kennedy couldn't say much more than they were having conversations about what comes after IX.  She told EW,
“That’s a conversation going on right now, too. I have to honestly tell you, could we [do nothing but stand-alones]? Sure. But I don’t know. We are looking at all of that.”

How do you feel about the news that we almost got a Boba Fett film from director Josh Trank?  And would you like to see Lucasfilm focus more on the stand alone films after Episode IX?  Let us know in the comments.
