Alan Tudyk Talks K-2SO and 'Rogue One' at Fan Expo Canada

Star Wars was well represented at this year's Fan Expo Canada.  Yesterday, Mark Hamill spoke to fans about the Original and Sequel Trilogy, and today Alan Tudyk took the stage in Toronto to speak about his career, and, of course the topic of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story came up.  Tudyk, who plays K-2SO in Rogue One, couldn't say much about the film but he did speak about the experience of portraying K-2SO through motion capture and what it's like to be in Star Wars.

First, he explained why the production decided to make K-2SO a motion capture character, rather than a costume, saying, "He's 7'1" and his arms are really spindle-y, there was no way to do that as a suit".

Tudyk, who is 6ft tall, had to wear stilts in order to play K2 during most of the shoot.  However, there were times when this was not possible.  "I was by cliff once and you can't wear stilts there, because you'll die if you make one wrong step," Tudyk recalled.  "So they had this backpack, which ended up being known as the backpack of shame...it had this head that was up where (K2's) head should be."

The "backpack of shame", became a source of great entertainment for Tudyk's co-stars.  He recalled on particular exchange with Diego Luna, who plays Cassian Andor.  "The first time I wore it he goes, 'Alan, it is terrible what has happened.  Everyone respected you just a moment ago, now they just feel sorry for you.  Could you please take that ridiculous backpack off, it is upsetting the entire crew.'"

He also praised the creature and make-up team working on the Star Wars films.  "You see the most amazing make-up and creature creations,' Tudyk told the audience. "You're like this is the most amazing alien I've ever seen and then they just walk behind you casually in the scene.  It's like a walking action figure!"

The rest of the panel was mostly dominated by talk about Tudyk's other roles, including Firefly, Wreck It Ralph, and his series Con Man, which he also directs and produces.  However, he did reflect on the role of droids in the Star Wars films.  "Droids have such an amazing history in their movies and their real characters."  He later added, "K2SO is another in the line of great, great droids".
