Gareth Edwards Discusses The Meaning Of 'Rogue One' With Empire

Last year at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim is where we learned that the title for the first Star Wars standalone film would be "Rogue One". The announcement quickly led to much speculation among fans as to what the name could mean. Now, with just a few months left until the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gareth Edwards has shed some light on the title's meaning.

In the newest issue of Empire Magazine, which is out on newsstands this Thursday, Edwards spoke briefly about the name and revealed that it can be interpreted in more than one way:

"I'd been thinking about it. What does it mean? 'Rogue One’ is a military call sign to some extent, but this is the first film that's gone off-piste and is not part of the saga – or the Anakin story – so it’s the 'rogue' one, you know?”

Edwards obviously refers to Luke Skywalker's Rogue Squadron that fought during the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, and was subsequently the subject of several Legends novels. This would lead us to believe that a certain character in the film, such as Jyn Erso, could use the call sign "Rogue One". Edwards seems to agree that the title could apply to Erso as well:

“It's kind of describing her as well in a similar way. It has [all] these split, multiple meanings that made it feel like the right choice."

It's also interesting, and quite amusing, to consider that this film is "Rogue" in the sense of what type of Star Wars film it is. It will definitely be interesting to see how the title figures into the plot of the film in the end, but also how many different ways it can be interpreted going forward.
