As we race towards the release of the new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, debuting on Thursday during NBC's coverage of the Rio Olympics, Entertainment Weekly will make the wait a little easier. EW's Anthony Breznican caught up with Rogue One director Gareth Edwards and chatted with him about the planet Jedha. While it's mostly a rehash of what we learned about the new planet at Star Wars Celebration last month, Edwards does drop some hints about it's significance.
Edwards said, "It’s a place where people who believe in the Force would go on a pilgrimage. It was essentially taken over by the Empire. It’s an occupied territory… for reasons we probably can’t reveal."
He later added, "There’s something very important in Jedha that serves both the Jedi and the Empire."
Jedha has been compared to real world locations such as Jerusalem and Mecca, so it clearly has a deep connection to the history of the Jedi. The fact that the name Jedha is so similar to Jedi only serves to further telegraph this. The logical speculation, raised in EW as well as other places, is that Jedha is a source of Kyber Crystals, which are used to power both lightsabers and the Death Star, making it very important to both the Jedi and the Empire.
