This week the internet has been abuzz with the rumors that reshoots for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story would be taking place this month, as well as what might or might not be the reason Disney executives ordered the reshoots. Today, our friends at MakingStarWars.net revealed some details about what the upcoming reshoots will entail, and shed some more light on what the reason for these reshoots are. These are Spoiler-Free, so even if you are trying to avoid all plot details about the film you will be safe to read on.
According to MSW,
- Some crew initially heard J.J. Abrams was supervising the reshoots.
- Gareth Edwards is doing the reshoots himself but with a partner, Christopher McQuarrie.
- Christopher McQuarrie, the final writer on Rogue One will be working extensively with Edwards onset to make sure they’re on the “same page” with the most recent draft of the film.
- Christopher McQuarrie’s draft of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was considered superior to the film they shot previously.
- It was not Edwards’ fault as McQuarrie’s draft wasn’t completed when much of the film was shot and revisions kept coming in that made the film feel uneven.
- 32 sets have been recreated for the reshoot.
- The crew expects they are reshooting 40% of the film.
- They are working 6 days a week for 8 weeks.
All things considered, things don't sound too bad. The early reports sometimes made it sound like the film was terrible and Disney executives were upset. Instead, according to this report, it seems the film was rushed into production before the script was ready. Not to mention that it worked on by at least three different writers at different points in the process. This is not unusual for films, however it is interesting that McQuarrie was brought in so late in the process (we didn't find out he was involved until the film was well into production).
The Abrams aspect is interesting as he seems to have mostly moved on from Star Wars film production (with his main focus having been the sequel trilogy). Though, given the fact that one of the reports stated that Disney wanted the film's tone to be more along the lines of A New Hope, it would make sense for Abrams to be there given the success The Force Awakens had at matching the tone of the Original Trilogy. It is also worth remembering that, while these reshoots are extensive, just about every film has them.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th and is directed by Gareth Edwards. The film stars Felicity Jones, Forest Whittaker, Donnie Yen, and Diego Luna.
