John Boyega, who debuted as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is currently filming Episode VIII, took a break from shooting this week to visit the Cannes film festival and receive the Chopard Trophy (along with Diary of a Teenage Girl star Bel Powley). Boyega took sometime at the awards to speak with Variety about The Force Awakens, Rey and Finn's relationship, Star Wars: Episode VIII, and more
On Finn and Rey's relationship in The Force Awakens and beyond, Boyega said,
"Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he
doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something
that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going
to go the way you think it’s going to go."
On working with director Rian Johnson on Episode VIII, he said,
Rian Johnson is great. It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone
will say: “How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?'” But it’s crazy.
On being people associating him with Finn and Star Wars for the rest of his life, Boyega told Variety,
They will, for the rest of my life, but it’s no big deal.
Star Wars Episode VIII hits theatres on December 15th, 2017.
