The Clone Wars Strikes Back | Episode 45

On this episode Dominic and Ciaran are joined by "Irish Chris" of the 501st to look back on and discuss the journey of Captain Rex on Star Wars: The Clone Wars (and a little Star Wars Rebels).  They focus on the episodes "The Hidden Enemy", "The Deserter", "Carnage of Krell", and "Orders" as they track the character development of Rex, from his role as the ideal clone to Rebel leader.  All this and much more!

  1. Dominic, great podcast as always. This discussion of Captain Rex is especially interesting. There are so many gaps to his story which I am sure we will eventually learn somehow. (Cough – anthology – cough). He is a very complex character indeed. This TCW Strikes Back episode has me thinking back to what I think is a very curious line from Rex himself in Rebels The Lost Commanders. Rex says to the crew of the Ghost, “Didn’t ya hear? The emperor said the clone army has out served its purpose and retired us. Now we spend our days just telling stories and slingin’ for joopas.”
I understand that the Emperor would have felt the need to offer a public explanation of the Clones suddenly becoming Storm Troopers. But I would think the Emperor assumes the Clones are all either dead or turned by Order 66? Palpatine would think ‘retired’ Clones not turned by Order 66 are a threat, I would think. And we all know how the Emperor treats any threat to himself. But we learn later in that episode that Wolf has been communicating a bit with the empire. So the empire generally and presumably the Emperor himself is aware of these retired Clones?
So was the Emperor’s statement about the Clone army out serving its purpose a public explanation to the galaxy or did Palpatine speak directly maybe even in person to Rex, Gregor and Wolf? If so, it doesn’t seem like Palpatine would offer anyone a peaceful retirement particularly someone like Rex who knows so much.
When we first see Rex again in The Lost Commanders he seems oddly and uncharacteristically indifferent to all that is still going on in the galaxy. And we know he is aware of what’s going on because he says, “the empire isn’t the republic. That’s for sure” to the rebels.
    Your thoughts?
