Season Two of Star Wars Rebels wrapped up last week with the episode "Twilight of the Apprentice", and, while the series has already been renewed for a third season, there have been some rumblings about the series' future. Cinelinx is reporting that Season Three will be the final season of Rebels and that the show will be replaced by a new animated series. The final season will be used to set up Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which hits theatres this December. This wouldn't be the last we would see of the Rebels characters however, as their stories would be continued through one off adventures in the form TV movies or direct to home media releases.
I will add that we've been hearing the same things from our sources, that Rebels would wrapping up to make way for a new animated series (from much of the same crew) and that we would still get one off adventures with the crew of The Ghost from time to time. It's also worth noting that the end of Rebels after three or four seasons was first reported back in 2014.
Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about this news. I love Rebels, but I feel the series struggled this Season to find its purpose. Season One was brilliant, so we know the series has great potential. I hope that having an end game in mind with Rogue One means that the episodes will have more of a drive pushing them forward than they did this Season. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed most of Season Two, I just felt it didn't convey the same sense forward momentum that Season One had. That being said, I'm not sure that I'm ready for the series to end. So I'm glad that at the very least we will get those follow up one-off adventures from time to time. As for the new animated series, it seem like a safe bet that it will be set in the Sequel era (or at least sometime after Return of the Jedi), which is would be very exciting!
As always, this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
