Today, Lucasfilm released the long awaited debut trailer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (as seen below).
Following the release, some interesting revelations have been uncovered by Entertainment Weekly reporters.Mon Mothma makes her cinematic return in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The famed leader of the Rebel Alliance, and former Senator during the years of the Republic, can be seen in the above trailer. Mothma briefs the film's protagonist, Jyn Erso, about her new mission: to steal the plans of the Death Star. Mothma's briefing harkens back to 1983's Return of the Jedi, where Mon Mothma (previously played by Caroline Blakiston) informed the Rebels of their mission to destroy the Second Death Star. It may have been forgotten, but Mon Mothma was featured in another Star Wars movie.
In 2005, the character Mon Mothma appeared in the deleted scenes of Revenge of the Sith. Her character was to play a crucial role in the political formation of the Rebel Alliance movement, against Palpatine's Republic (and soon-to-be empire). Mon Mothma was played by Genevieve O' Reilly in ROTS. According to Entertainment Weekly, a Lucasfilm source has verified that O'Reilly will reprise her role as Mon Mothma in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
It seems pretty clear that O'Reilly will play a prominent role in this movie, unlike in 2005.
