Along with everything else that it brought to the Galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: The Force Awakens gave us the most unique final scenes of any Star Wars film to date. The aerial panning shot of Rey and Luke on the cliff just before the iris out in the credits was a stunning end to an emotional scene and film, but it could have been different. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Co-producer Ben Rosenblatt recently spoke about his work on The Force Awakens at the Hollywood Professional Association Tech Retreat in Palm Springs, California. He explains that an alternate version of the scene was considered. THR reports:
"The final shot of the film was lensed from a helicopter, looking down at Rey and Luke, but Rosenblatt admitted that director J.J. Abrams was conflicted about using that shot or concluding with a close-up of Rey. He added that the decision was driven by John Williams' score, and it "left you with this sweeping emotional epic [feel], and you’re going to see a lot of that in Episode VIII.”
He also added that approximately 482 different versions of The Force Awakens were produced to accommodate different aspect ratios, numerous languages and more, making last minute changes daunting.. He also talked about about high dynamic range (HDR) in relation to The Force Awakens.
I personally really liked the last shot we see in the film. I also find it interesting that it could be at least somewhat representative of what we will be seeing in Episode VIII. Would have rather have seen a different shot? Let us know the comments below!

i was thinking dont you dare to end the movie now... and the movie ends, so much waiting to see 2 seconds of luke
ReplyDeletePersonally I didn't DISLIKE the end shot, but it would've been better if it was just a wide angle shot or a low angle shot of the both of them standing there.
ReplyDeleteLOVED the final shot! I only wish there had been at least the slightest bit of dialogue.
ReplyDeleteThe only grumble i can find in that film for now having seen it twice is the lack of star Wars wipes and fades in-between set pieces. And in some cases jumping cuts that make you feel like something had been cut out last min and they did not polish off the splice. Yet its up for best editing so what the hell do i know? I feel the last shot of the film has kind of backed episode 8 into a corner in which to start off at. Unlike all the other Star Wars films this trilogy is not going to have the space in time as the others do, as in jumping 4 years 5 years 18 months ect. We will be expecting to see the first conversation with Luke and Rey and what that might be and we will possibly end up seeing Rey train. Ok is this a bad thing? I don't know but this dose not give the fans anything to play with in between the films this way in speculating what's happening and this is what's given the Star Wars franchise its greatest creative base. We will have to see how it all turns out all I can say about Episode 8 is the ship is on Auto pilot and coming in nice and steady it will take a complete idiot to know it off course now.
ReplyDeleteI thought the ending did not look like star wars at all, it was too much forced epicness with a non believable starring contest...
ReplyDeleteThat helicopter shot at the end of the movie totally took me out of it. I do not know what JJ was thinking.
ReplyDeleteEven Lucas managed to get flying shots right in the prequels with those damn clone transport / drop ships.
I think the final shot mean a lot just by the silence ans the regard of both. Back to a Master and his futur apprentice. The meaning of getting this lightsaber... Nice end. (Excuse my english)
ReplyDeleteHmm, personally, I was totally ready for end credits slightly before any of these shots. The movie was all about the search for Luke, right? I think the most awesome moment to end the show was right when Rey and Chewie were taking off into the galaxy to track the missing Jedi down. It felt reminiscent of the end of Empire Strikes Back, when people were leaving to 'take the next step'. I actually felt really awkward when the film Didn't end right when they shot off into hyperspace, and suddenly there they were arriving at the planet. I felt totally taken out of the satisfying ending moment.
ReplyDeleteSee how it should have ended on "how it should have ended" (HISHE). yup

ReplyDeleteThe ending was fantastic, as was the rest of the movie. I grew up with all 6 and couldn't have asked for a better sequel to the OT. Let the story play out, it's a damn 3 movie arc.
ReplyDeleteThe final shot was great. It did its job of leaving you wanting more
ReplyDeleteI didn't like the final section at all.
ReplyDeleteIt seemed tacked on.
The film should have finished with Rey leaving to search for Luke. We didn't need to see him at all.
@ Chris Rollason
ReplyDeleteExactly!
That final shot its so different but i dont know i feel look likes a biblic passage with Moisés(rey) ando Luke(god) up on the hill to recive the 10 commanments
ReplyDeleteI Like so much ando the Music, blow up!
I bet this was cut out of the film. "The Force is strong with my Family. My Father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too."
