'Battlefront' Developer Says Game "May Not Have the Depth" Gamers Wanted

By: Dominic Jones

The new video game Star Wars Battlefront has been met with mixed reviews at best, with many feeling that there just isn't enough content in the game.  Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen, speaking at the Nasdaq Investor Conference in Europe, responded to the criticism of the new game saying,

"Star Wars Battlefront is a first-person shooter, but it is [one of] the only teen-rated first-person shooters.  We had designed it to be a much more accessible product to a wide age group.

"So, an 8-year-old could play with his father on the couch, as well as a teenager or 20-year-old could play the game and enjoy it. It is more accessible. And for the hardcore, it may not have the depth that they wanted in the game."

I think it's a shame that the response to first game from the EA era of Star Wars gaming has been so mixed.  It feels like they tried to walk a line between making the game for Star Wars fans who aren't gamers as well as for gamers.  Unfortunately, it seems they weren't as successful as they could have been.  Hopefully the next game that's coming from Visceral will be more successful.

  1. Please if they had kept everything that made the first 2 successful the reviews would be glowing but no they rather focus on the OT than have battles from both Eras.

    1. Totally agree with you Jeff! I think it is a brilliant and beautiful looking game. People will always want to bitch about something!

    2. I mean you guys are right but they left everything out that made battlefront, battlefront I would be happy if they just called this game something different and not steal the name of a great game.

    3. The people that are happy with this game must have never played the originals. Fans of Battlefront are so unhappy because the previous versions not only had more content, but we're better executed overall. The only thing this game has over the second Battlefront are graphics.

Imagine large scale space battles where you could fight your way to an enemy starship, and land inside where you fight your way in on foot to destroy it from the inside out. Imagine being able to pick certain planets, then choose the Era from which the armament and heroes were from, then choosing what type of battle it was (CTF, Conquest, etc). Also imagine being able to play as heroes ranging from Yoda, Darth Maul, Mace Windu, General Grevious, Luke Skywalker and much more.... THIS WAS BATTLEFRONT 2! Battlefront 3 falls flat on its face as a sequel to such a triumph Battlefront was in not just gaming, but also the Star Wars universe. Also, I find the excuse that they were trying to make it family friendly an insult to gamers' intelligence.

All of this could have been included and the same rating kept intact, and more should have been implemented to truly make it a sequel.

For this I give it a 3/10, and am embarrassed to say I payed $70 for such a pile of trash.

    5. Adam is the best! Like you have some great ideas. I almost wish you worked for ea but then I remembered they would probably take your soul and you need that for your good ideas. I can't believe these assholes are like "it's great game 10/10 beauty, what else is there? Fallout4 sux." Like wow humans are really going down hill.

  3. ^ The problem isn't the focus on the OT, it's the lack of things to do! Four of the "modes" are nearly identical, there's no storyline, no primary campaign, no spaceflight (!!!!), and only five playable characters with questionable abilities. There are only four worlds to play the games on, with a fifth coming. If you don't like online multiplayer gaming, you're screwed after maybe three hours of playing solo. This is a sixty dollar shell of a game, which EA is going to attempt to flesh out with DLC. The response to this has been so negative that whether there will be sufficient sales to support it very long is still in issue - they had better change their plans and make ALOT of that DLC free of charge before they try gouging more money out of their customers. Until this is something more engrossing than a good-looking Star Wars port, it's a major miscalculation.

  4. I like it there are so many game modes but not a lot of maps at least the game worked at launch not a lot of EA games can say that. What they should have done is made the season pass cheaper than $50 that would have made sense.

  6. EA's new battlefront for me is like some of those girl who you met at a club. They look wonderful at the first sight but next morning when you finally start talking with them you will see she doesnt have that much common stuff you can talk on... Good thing about the new Battlefront is Its graphics and Star Wars Concept.. Except those 2 It doesnt worths what It costs..

  7. I would like to see a space fighter battle mode as well as more fighter variants. Maybe DLC in the future?

  8. the people who are crying about this game are a bunch of morons in my opinion....It was known ALMOST TWO YEARS in advance what would be included in this game and what this game was going to be all about......almost two years later people are now acting shocked.....I got a clue for you. Before you spend your hard earned money on something..do your homework first. you all look like a bunch of tools.

  9. What a wonderful game project ruined by the garbage producers themselves called 'EA', EA is a piece of I a33, that thinks selling you 10% of a game with no content and then making you pay more and more for a half decent mosaic will make them a respected company. EA everyone knows you do this garbage bullI take a hint next time. Stop ruining the gaming industry.

  10. I mean it's okay if you like multiplayer you'll like it but if you wanted that battlefront game like on ps2 and xbox your better off buying that one cause this one is terrible if you wanted that one. No galactic conquest, no clone wars, only about 6 hero's when in the orginal battlefront 2 there were at least 16 had Jango and Boba and that twilek jedi, I mean as I said if you like multiplayer which I think they did a good job on in this one your good, but it is complete shit if you wanted a battlefront like in the past. I really wish they added all those modes in, would have made this game easily one of the best games on the console and much more playable for people and for sure increase their sales, it's sad when companies don't want to spend money to make money. I guarantee it wouldn't have been that expensive to add these modes in and I bet these modes themselves would easily sell the game for them knowing how many people like space battles and galactic conquest and clone wars and hero's and I could go on and on but overall this game is just 5/10 because simply they stole the name and tried to say it's a better game when it just wont be. I mean the multiplayer is good yeah but that's not what I was looking for out of battlefront necessarily.

  11. The PC version seems rife with cheaters. That combined with horrible team balancing means that you'll often find yourself in a game where one side gets consistently dominated. I don't mind losing, if we can put up a fair fight. EA doesn't seem to be doing much about it so I imagine player interest is falling off fast.

  12. Do they seriously think that the "lack of depth" is related to it being rated T for teen? All the other great Star Wars games were rated T for teen. Strong language and sexual content is not the "depth" that is lacking, it's the lack of a story or campaign that makes it disappointing to fans like me. It's fun anyway, but it will get old fast.

  13. I have to agree with some of the criticism as far as not having a story line and a campaign mode. Come on EA, for $70 plus for the "deluxe edition" of this game, I really was expecting more. Also the GUI/menu set up is not user friendly at all...but the graphics are amazing...in a scale of 1 to 10 I have to say in my opinion Battlefront is a 7. If it had a story/campaign mode I'd gave it a 9 or 10...

  14. I love the game. I am glad that they left voice chat out because I want it to be a game that kids can enjoy as well. I do agree that there are too many modes and they should have instead focused on mission based linear design (storm the castle/defend the castle) and improved some of the balancing a bit. I think that The Jakku level is a huge step up and I love the variety. I would say that my biggest gripe is that there is not more depth in the fighter squadron levels. there should be way more manuvers to choose from. As it is now just having the roll and uturn option as well as the defensive L1 option is so very basic. have a limited number of lock-ons to use and then have to pick up a power up to get more would have been better, strategy wise. I kind of hate the recharge mechanic.

I love the game though and I think that it is the best SW effort in years. VERY excited to see what is to come soon!!!

  15. the game is fun for a while but the problem is: there is very little content to speak of, 4 maps, no campaign, multiplayer ai is no where, vehichle gameplay is meh the only vehicle that is the most balanced is the atst, and the vehicle as power up thing is not a good idea espessially when rebel based turrets can be entered and used by both sides, the hero powers are are somewhat unbalanced the only ones that are good are boba and luke, vader is ok, also the snipers as star card thing is kinda dumb, and character customizations is not even customization it is pre-set looks now the shadow troop sooks cool but we wanted to be able to customize each armor piece and color them to our personal likings, plus I know a lot of people hated the beta controls for the flight but I actuelly loved it when I tweeked the controls abit now its is a pain in the ass. any way they should have leardned from there prediseser

  16. Starwars battlefeild 3 was nothing like the first two games. Maybe if they put in actual effort people would have liked it. Great job on the map design tho. But if we all liked games for their map design the video game ET would have been a beloved game instead of hated like your trash game. There were some good concepts they just only got carried out by what seems like lazy people. Like if your survival game was actually survival this would possibly be a different review. It should have been more like call of duty survival instead it's like some 6 round bs. How can you call it survival if it simply ends abruptly. You're competing against no one because there isn't even a leaderboard to show how much you kicked your friends ass.

  17. It scratches an itch, but it does little more than that.
The gameplay is decent, but it lacks variety. I don't really buy the "made for all ages" as a reason, because that doesn't explain why there's so little content.
So many maps have really bad respawn areas, where you're likely to die before you've even oriented yourself to what's going on.

On many game modes I simply can't even get a game full enough to make it worth playing.

The game still has potential to be a good game, but they need to flesh it out, and they need to do it for free. They charged $90 for the base game here in Australia and it's simply not worth the price.

  18. Got the game for PS4 recently and I like it. Sure it has it's pros and cons like most games do but I enjoy it.

  19. I enjoy it. To a degree. I have to be in the mood. Battlefront II is perfect. I remember being so excited back before it came out. I love both of the originals and even some of the PSP games. Now, I agree with everything everyone has said, but I actually enjoy the game. First off, it was free to me in my console bundle, so that helped, but as far as modern standards go, this is pretty much what I expected. I think it's ridiculous that EA is going to charge $50 for maybe make the game whole, but I think I'm down for what is coming out. It's a nice change of pace considering most shooters out there now have been the same game for years. Anyways, that's my two cents.

  21. Well, this is no surprise. People have been saying this since the first gameplay details started coming out. And it got reinforced once the beta came out.

This is Battlefield: Star Wars, and NOT Star Wars: Battlefront 3. They threw out absolutely everything that made the first 2 games in the franchise successful and narrowly focused on the mindless twitch gaming and eye candy to sell their game. There's no gameplay here. This is a basic team deathmatch slugfest and nothing more.

The ADD-stricken kids out there are loving it for the most part. It's a dumbed-down Battlefield set in a Star Wars backdrop. But people looking for a good Star Wars game - like REAL sequel to the Battlefront series - are out of luck. Outside of the gorgeous graphics that capture the Star Wars universe better than any game to date, it has little to offer in terms of gameplay that hasn't already been beaten to death in a bunch of other games. Remove the Star Wars theme and make it anything from slightly futuristic combat to totally sci-fi themed, and the game would be exactly the same. There's nothing other than the graphics and locations that make this "Star Wars" in any way at all.

What's always made or broken Star Wars games was immersion and storyline - neither of which are present in this game. Epic story lines that immersed the players into the Star Wars universe and made them care about the outcome of the story is what makes a successful Star Wars game.

This game is a failed attempt to cash in on the revived popularity of Star Wars and nothing else.

  22. I didn't have any high hopes for this game other than hyperrealistic graphics and great soundeffects. I ordered it as a part og Deluxe Ps4 pack and got exactly what was promised. An ONLINE MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER with several modes and 4 different planet backdrops. One looking more gorgeous than the next.. As Im not a big online gamer my expectations were met, but I thought I would not use many hours on this game. After the initial awe of its splendid graphics and all modes were checked out I layed it down... UNTIL the Jakku free dlc lured me back in. IT MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE for me. Now I have clocked more than 100 hours on that one level and still have more modes to check out. If this is the quality levels of the dlc,s Im totally in for the rest. Worth every penny in my opinion.

  23. I for one am glad I rented the game first, bfore buying it. The game looks amazing, but I found it rather lacking. I did not know that it was not going to have any campaign, I had not heard that, and was really disappointed that there is no campaign. Im not a big fan FPS games, so even though Im a huge SW fan, I may not buy it.

  24. Lol.. don't worry guys you have to buy the rest of the maps in the DLC ea got your pocket again

  25. I love how the EA response makes it sound like there is any sort of local content value where a father could play the game with his son on a couch... There isn't enough offline content to keep someone interested longer than a couple of hours where as in the first two battlefronts the offline content was what made my friends and spend hours and hours playing the game. Together. In the same room. This EA response just shows that they still haven't grasped what they are failing at: making people want to play this game together. I could go on but I'll stop here before I rant

    ReplyDelete
  26. I only play multiplayer, so offline I ain't fussed. Yeah lack of content. there gonna stretch it out. problem there you need enough content to last till the dlc. would of thought they'd know hard-core gamers would buy this and be the ones to comment on it. I just be happy you didn't shoot like a stormtrooper. I have to wobble the mouse constantly to keep the shots on target. They shoot around the mark. it says FAIL when the devs make comments like that.
