Warning: This story contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If you haven't seen it yet, stop reading now.
It seems that an early version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens would have seen a second major character killed during the action of the film. Oscar Isaac revealed in a recent interview with GQ magazine that when he first accepted the part, Poe Dameron was intended to die when he crashed the TIE fighter on Jakku. According to Isaac (via GQ),
Isaac says he had been summoned to Paris for what he suspected might be a role in The Force Awakens.
Sure enough, earlier that day, he had met with Abrams, screenwriter
Lawrence Kasdan, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and Abrams
had pitched him the character of Poe Dameron, a badass fighter pilot
battling against the remnants of the Empire.
“He’s amazing!” said Abrams.
“Sounds good!” thought Isaac, whose first experience in a movie theater had been seeing The Empire Strikes Back.
“He opens the whole movie!” said Abrams.
“Sounds great!” thought Isaac.
“And then,” Abrams went on. “He dies.”
“Oh,” thought Isaac.
“I’d done that before,” he told me later. “Set up the plot for the main
guy and then die spectacularly.” (He had played just such a role in The Bourne Legacy.)
Abrams
could surely feel the enthusiasm drain out of the actor when he
revealed Dameron’s fate. “I guess that’s not what you hoped for when you
got on a plane to Paris,” he said. Thus the invitation to join him at
Café de Flore, where Abrams patiently sipped coffee while Isaac sat
hunched over the director’s iPhone, reading one of the most closely
guarded scripts in the history of film. Abrams hoped to convince the
actor that there were still compelling reasons to join the Star Wars fraternity.
“I
wanted to impress upon him how much I wanted this to work,” Abrams
remembers. It was a chance, he told Isaac, to create a role that could
live on in all corners of the Star Wars universe—novels and
comic books and video games and so on. The conversation lasted well into
the night.
“We talked about the story and who this character could be,”
Abrams says. “I loved the collaboration. People like Oscar are the
people you listen to.”
Still, when they parted, Isaac remained hesitant.
“I
went back home [to New York], and I thought about it,” he says. “Then I
wrote him and said, ‘Okay. I’ll do it!’ I figured it would be a cameo:
I’ll come in, do my thing, and maybe it’s actually better not to have to
sign myself up for three movies.” By that time, though, things had
changed and Abrams soon wrote back: “Never mind. I’ve figured it out.
You’re in the whole movie now.”
“I was like, ‘Holy shit! Alright, cool,’ ” Isaac says.
If you asked me, they made the right choice to bring Poe back after the crash. It made for some fun scenes between him and Finn and BB-8 at the Resistance Base.

With respect to naysayers, I'm glad that Poe survived the crash. With respect to those who were like "this movie drools," this movie rules! Best early Christmas gift ever!
ReplyDeletehelps fill the massive hole left by han
ReplyDeleteThere's always been a hope that Poe will have a larger role in Ep8. I just hope that this initial idea of having Poe die didn't effect what role he would have in Ep8.
ReplyDeleteNothing will fill the hole left by Han. Bad move to kill him.
ReplyDeleteFord doesn't want to do Han anymore.
DeleteAlthough I am sad that he died, I am totally ok with it. It's time for a new generation and he wanted to die in the old trilogy but Lucas wouldn't let him.
DeleteThis was ford's request

DeleteI don't think Han is dead. Maybe I'm in disbelief, but they didn't show him dying, just getting injured and falling
Delete...down how many miles of shaft?! He's gone, kid.
DeleteNow it's time for Lando to get his falcon back
DeleteIt had to happen. Qui-Gon in I, Obi-Wan in IV, now Han in VII. A mentor/father-figure must die to propel the motivations of the other characters.
DeleteI was more than thrilled at his brief reunion, glad he'll be around for a bit.
ReplyDeletegreat to keep poe in the story, he is the new wedge whom also i would have like to have seen in the new star wars film
ReplyDeletePoe is completely irrelevant in the movie, so it makes sense to kill him. So is Snoke. So is Finn actually. In fact other than the central characters, most were irrelevant-- in fact, most of the plot developments would have happened even if many characters did not exist, other than Han and Ren and Rey. Horrible script , huge plot holes. I was totally underwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteExcept for saving Han, Finn and Rey at Maz' castle und destroying the weapon of the first order.

DeleteI totally agree with your comment I was totally underwhelmed and it's a shame as I was looking forward to seeing it. I felt the humour was really overused throughout too.
DeleteI agree with Thomas above. Was just very lazy if spectacular rehash imho. Having Poe survive was predictable and cheesy. I just wanted more from it - more mysteries and questions to leave you hanging and discussing til the next one - instead its just the same kinda ones.
ReplyDeleteThat's what you get with Disney and Abrams it was totally lackluster !!! And what's up with Kylo he's the worst along with Snokes he looked like he came from the Green Lantern movie

ReplyDeleteI am glad he survived, this sets up the movies to have a big 3 like the original trilogy did, instead of Han, Luke and Leia, you have, Finn, Rey and Poe. I LOVED this movie, every second of it... except they missed a great opportunity to say the line "This is not the droid you are looking for". Maybe a Stormtrooper interrogating a guy with an R7 droid?? lol
ReplyDelete@mountaindewbass Leia feeling his death in the Force was your confirmation.
ReplyDeleteI think they made the right choice. The alliance needs a hero (along with the jedi). There needs to be a human element to the victories. I mean HAN is now gone, we need someone else without the supernatural abilities to humanize things. Someone human, crafty, cunning and amazingly skilled along with a bit brazen, rough around the edges but a natural. I believe the character POE can be exactly that.
ReplyDeleteGood move keeping Poe. Horrible move killing Han in this movie in this way. I know he had to die (we all do), but come on! It's been over 30 years! Give us one scene with the original 3 on screen together, and a movie that we can leave smiling like little kids one last time. Then knock him off in the first 10 minutes of episode VIII. Heck knock him off off-screen if you must, but Han does not get sucker-stabbed like that! The captain goes down willingly with his ship to successfully save his friends! Poe is irrelevant in the face of all that was wrong with that betrayal to the life-long Star Wars fans.
ReplyDeleteI extremely disliked the way Han died, but think about this. How do you kill one of the smartest, daring, lucky scoundrels in the galaxy? You sure can't out wit him. You have to use his heart against him. That's the only way you can make him weak enough to get close enough to kill him. Poe is irrelevant, and Rey is coming into her force abilities way to quickly? Ren? If they wanted to create a villain that those of us who have been with SW since day one, they have succeeded. I want that SOB dead, then put in a bacta tank, and killed again..
ReplyDeleteI'm fine with Poe living, and the death of Han (although I'm sad, not mad.) Overall I really enjoyed the film, pacing is good, story is good, special effects compliment the movie and aren't THE MOVIE. My basic critiques are these: The scene of Han & co. fighting of the debt collectors & monsters was totally irrelevant to the story - I would've rather used that screen time to develop other key characters like Snoke & Captain Phasma etc. I despise all computerized characters (Snoke & Mav) I'd rather see a human with a mask on.

ReplyDeleteHan's death overshadows the whole film for me. It pissed me off, frankly. I already knew he was going to die before I saw the film, but I would rather have seen him sacrifice himself to save others than get killed by his son. This makes Ben irredeemable in my eyes and I would love to see Luke finish him off with little effort.
ReplyDeleteI am also disappointed that Luke ran away and hid like a baby after the death of his padawans. That was selfish. Not seeing Han, Luke and Leia together again is also disappointing. I wish they could have gotten Ford to do one more film and kill him off then. Not seeing the "Big 3" together again sucks.
I give the film 3 out of 4 stars.
Poe is the man! Definitely the right move to keep him! Long live Black Leader!
ReplyDeleteThe movie is more about the new cast to keep it going on with out the old cast are their to help you to like the new cast and to move it along so when they are not their you would like them to
ReplyDeleteIm still not sure i am ok with Han's death scene. Having Han dodge Kylo's saber turn and start running towards Chewie only to have Kylo force push him off the edge would have been better imho.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great move keeping Poe alive! We all know no one character can beat Han. So why not have two new characters fill that space and drive their own storylines in the next film! Finn and Poe! Imagine we all loved the 5min at the beginning of the film when they escaped together! And its clear to see that Finn never went with Rey to find Luke! So what does that mean well Finn needs to in Episode 8 find a way to help her once he awakens, and well he can't fly a ship and we know who can! Poe! So we are going to see some true Bromance between the two and I am excited to see it! Thats what I think at least!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I see way too much correlation between Star Wars A New Hope and Star Wars The Force Awakens. Force Awakens starts out with a droid traveling across a desert planet until it runs into a human with force abilities. (Sound Familiar?) Rey (Luke) then runs into Finn(Han) and they escape the Empire....sorry I meant the First Order. The First Order is building a super weapon that can destroy planets, and the Rebels must destroy it before it destroys them. Rey receives guidance from Han Solo (Ben Kenobi) who dies like Kenobi and Moz (Yoda)who was small and orange versus small and green. It feels like the whole movie was a replication of A New Hope with different characters. I think that's why people like it so much, because it is easy to relate to characters we have already known for a long time.
ReplyDeleteSo glad Poe didn't die early in the film! I definitely want to see him in the next film.

ReplyDeleteNow it have sense why he wakes up and didn't try to find BB8 if he was on same planet
