Kathleen Kennedy Confirms Saga Films are About 'The Skywalker Family'

Ever since Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens was announced back in October 2012, fans have wondered whether or not the new films would continue the story of the Skywalker family or if they would shift the focus to new characters (with the legacy characters in supporting roles).  Now, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed once and for all that the sequel trilogy (and all future saga films) are about "the Skywalker family saga" and other Star Wars stories will be told in the Anthology films.

In a recent interview The Costco Connection (because, why not?) Kennedy said,

“The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga,” she explains. “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

While this isn't really anything new, it's nice to have a clear confirmation of what to expect (in the broadest of terms) in the different varieties of films.

Since the mid trilogy was anchored to Luke's story line, I honestly think that Leia's character will be more prominent and her role will become even more important. A New Hope was written as if Luke was an only child. Leia is Luke's biological twin and there is a gap between their force sensitivity as represented on film. Since this saga is about the family, it would make sense that the skywalker twins are equally represented and that Leia would be the one to further the family line. Leia giving birth to Rey(Kira?) makes her equally as important as Luke to the trilogy as a whole.

Just laying the groundwork for Hayden's return. Ironic, now he will have a chance to redeem himself, just like the character.

This is driving me crazy! It word make sense for Rey to be the Skywalker-Solo link, to embody the big three into one character, though it doesn't seem plausible that Han and Leia would abandon their child on Jakku. I guess there must be a pretty creative plot twist to explain that if it's the case. There is still the possibility of Kylo Ren being a wayward Skywalker-Solo and Rey being Luke's child, abandoned for her own protection. No doubt Kylo Ren would be redeemed at some point if he's a family member.

I don't ever see Leia becoming a prominent character. As far as cannon go's well yes. But it's a much more. Broad statement, she ment the skywalker family. Leia will be a supporting character as they pass the torch. What else do you want? As far as Return of the Jedi, an Leia being forgot.. she was never forgot, that's the story... Leia is only so useful.. The over all episodes dont need to revolve around her..
