Rumor: Darth Vader to Appear in 'Rogue One'

The first Star Wars: Anthology film, Rogue One, seems to have started filming (in secret) and with that some details about the film may begin to trickle out.  Given that the film will feature a group of rebels, led by Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), who steal the plans to the first Death Star, fans have been wondering if Darth Vader may show up in the film, seeing as he is hot on the heels of Princess Leia and the stolen plans at the beginning of A New Hope (which Rogue One will lead into).  Well, it seems fans may be getting their wish.  Birth Movies Death is reporting that Vader will feature in the film, though he won't be the main antagonist (rumors suggest Ben Mendelsohn may be portraying that role).

According to Birth Movies Death,
"I ran into a good source this past weekend and, over drinks, was told a nugget that should make people pretty intrigued: Darth Vader will be in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. He will not be the main antagonist but he will be working behind the scenes, pulling strings and will appear onscreen. Literally, I'm told - he'll be showing up via viewscreen or holo projection or something. Will our heroes actually run into the Dark Lord of the Sith in person? My source wouldn't say. My source was also mum about Grand Moff Tarkin, who was of course the commander of the fully operational Death Star."

I think it would be really cool to see Vader on screen again.  We know from Star Wars Rebels what simply his presence could do.  I also think this would be a great opportunity to reiterate how much of a threat Vader is, especially if the heroes come up against him in the film.

One other quick note about Rogue One.  Lots of people have been speculating if we'll get some Rogue One news at Comic Con this week.  Unfortunately, this is very, very unlikely.  Recall that due to the film's title being similar to Paramount's Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Disney agreed not to promote the film until after Rogue Nation comes out (which is in a few weeks).  The only exception was Star Wars Celebration in April where we got the first details about the film, as well as a short teaser.  Unless another exception has been a greed upon between the two companies, don't expect anything about this film at SDCC.  Now as for the Han Solo film that was just announced, well, anything is fair game.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
