Guillermo del Toro Wants to Make a Jabba the Hutt Anthology Film

By: Dominic Jones

There's been lots of talk about the Star Wars: Anthology films lately.  Rogue One begins shooting in a few weeks, and we recently got news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 22 Jump Street) are directing a Han Solo Anthology film due for release in 2018.  We're at a point right now where there is so much potential for directors to make the Star Wars film they have always wanted to do.  For Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) that would be a Godfather-style Jabba the Hutt origin film.

Del Toro told Yahoo! Movies,
“This is not real, this is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it.  I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”

Obviously this isn't happening, and del Toro is just talking about a dream project for him.  So don't expect to see a del Toro helmed Jabba movie in the next five years.  Still, it's fun to think about all the potential for movies based around iconic characters. I think a Jabba movie has some potential for a great story.  With the upcoming Han Solo film and all the rumors about a Boba Fett film, it definitely seem possible we could at least see Jabba in an upcoming Anthology film.

  5. A Star Wars gangster flick staring a slug written in subtitled huttese? That's either genius or completely insane. Possibly both.

  8. hahaha brilliant.

i dont' know if this would work (beyond the awesome jabbas he'd create) but i like the idea of a star wars mobster flick. can we just have a dozen (well made) anthology films for the next decade, already?

keep the main storyline succinct and lean while fleshing out the universe with all this other cool stuff by keeping it separate and hyper focused.

    WIN
