Opinion: Rebels Season One Top Ten Moments: #7: Obi Wan's Final Message

By Ciaran Duggan & Dominic Jones,

Today we continue our countdown of the Top Ten moments from Season One of Star Wars Rebels, as chosen by SWU readers!  Today we look at the shocking climax from the series premiere, 'Spark of Rebellion'.

Dominic:
Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe and has transcended all of the major installments in the franchise thus far (the Originals, the Prequels, and The Clone Wars).   It was only fitting that he be there to kick off Rebels as well.  The inclusion of Obi-Wan ties this series in with all that has come before it and gives our new heroes a closer connection with our old heroes.

Kenobi's message was, in many ways, very much like Obi-Wan at this point in time.  Sad, but with a touch of hope.  The line "in time, a new hope will emerge" is still goose bump inducing and the perfect way to begin a story set in one of the darkest points of the Star Wars saga.

Ciaran:

Obi Wan Kenobi! OBI-WAN KENOBI! When the inaugural trailers and video material were released for this series, the main aspect which immediately generated excitement for the debut of the show was the line: "This is Obi Wan Kenobi, I regret to report that both our Jedi order and the Republic have fallen.". Obi Wan's return added an air of legitimacy to integrating this show into the new Star Wars Canon. Star Wars fans were able to watch new Star Wars content, as we became enlightened upon the words which were expressed by Obi Wan to the remaining surviving Jedi, in his encoded transmission, towards the climax of ROTS.

The appearance of one of the most beloved legacy characters, voiced superbly by voice actor James Arnold Taylor, heightened anticipation for the series and Obi Wan's appearance in this episode did not disappoint. The significance of this scene was given added weight by Kevin Kiner's magnificent rendition of the John Williams' force theme score. The words which were spoken by Obi Wan were given that additional poignancy and hooked the audience in.

Visually, this was nicely complimented with the montage procession, as we got a glimpse into the characters' disheartened mindset following the departure of Ezra Bridger. It seemed all hope was lost, but Obi Wan's words rang true: "we must persevere and in time a new hope will emerge." In timely fashion, Ezra Bridger makes his final choice to stick with the team, symbolically demonstrated by handing Kanan's lightsaber back to it's rightful owner. Indeed, Obi Wan's words would ring true in not just the short term, but also in longevity...through the upbringing of Luke Skywalker.
