Rumor: Luke Skywalker's Son in The Force Awakens?

By: Dominic Jones

Our friend Jason Ward over at MakingStarWars.net has heard a very interesting tidbit relating to the lineage of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.  According to four separate sources Luke will have a son in the new film.  It sounds like this may turn out to be a surprise reveal so if you don't want to know who is playing the son of Skywalker then stop reading now.  This is you official SPOILER ALERT!  If you want to know more, then scroll down.

According to Jason at MSW Domhnall Gleeson will be playing Luke's son in The Force Awakens.  What makes this rumor especially interesting is that we had heard previously that Gleeson was an Imperial who had defected away from the Rebel Alliance/New Republic (or whatever they will be called in the new film).

About the rumor, Jason writes,
Something is going on with this story because in the last week I’ve heard Domhnall Gleeson is Luke Skywalker’s son four times. Four times. Four different sources, three really trusted and one new but apparently on the money for most things. Four different spheres of development without much chance of overlap between the sources. So either Gleeson is the son of Skywalker in The Force Awakens or someone prominent in the production is spreading misinformation (which I doubt).

This could turn out to be a very interesting dynamic.  Imagine the father-son relationship Gleeson's character and Luke would have considering Gleeson is fighting on the side that Luke fought for so long and sacrificed so much (including his own father) to defeat.  It also raises the question of what is the Rebellion up to that would cause Gleeson's character to turn his back on them.  Prior rumors suggest that it will be the fact that the Rebellion is considering using Death Star III to destroy a planet which stores a dark side weapon.

Another aspect of the rumors surrounding Gleeson's character that makes this all the more interesting, is that while he is an Imperial, he isn't necessarily loyal to Empire either.  Jason describes his situation as,
Apparently, Gleeson’s character is playing both sides to disarm the galaxy of its super weapons held by both sides which “should not be allowed to exist according to his internal moral compass.” But it appears he might do some bad things in the name of the greater good over the course of the film.

There is a lot of interesting stuff here, especially considering we hadn't heard anything about Gleeson' character until recently.  This could make for a fascinating character in the film, and I would love to see the new film challenge viewers' beliefs about the characters they knew in the Original Trilogy by showing how this supposed Cold War that has existed for around thirty years has changed.  Perhaps Gleeson's character will serve that purpose.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.

  5. What about Han and leia's first born anakin solo who died when he was 21, and why is chewbacca still alive he dies when anakin solo is 8 years old

    1. Anakin died a lot younger than 21, in fact at the time even Jacen and Jaina were still Padawans.

The reason why is that apparently you didn't get the memo that the new movies aren't following the Extended Universe novels. The new films ignore the EU; fans are supposed to think of the EU as an alternate universe basically.

  6. Wow people! Don't you realize that the old EU is no more. The canon has been rebooted. Chewbacca lives. Anakin Solo isn't a character in the movie or otherwise. Same for Lumiya or Jacen.

  7. Yeah- I am starting to buy into the idea that the new characters will be "modeled after" EU characters with different names and fates. It makes sense why all the secrecy about his character that he could be a skywalker, son of a redheaded troublemaker but not necessarily "Ben" skywalkers. Likewise Rey seems to be modeled after Jaina without actually being her. If true I like this idea. Keeps everyone happy while allowing them to be original. I do hope they do use SOME EU stuff at least- that would be awesome!
