Rumor: Details About Gary Whitta's Departure From the 2016 Stand Alone Film

A few days ago it was announced that Gary Whitta has left the first stand alone Star Wars film, slated for a December 16, 2016.  Naturally this raised a few questions about why he had left the Gareth Edwards directed film.  Cinelinx may have found the answer.  One of their sources told them that Whitta had only been brought in to write an initial draft of the script.  The story of the film had apparently been established by the Lucasfilm Story Group and Whitta's job was to take their story treatment and turn it into an actual script.  In addition, it was also part of the original plan for Whitta to leave the project after a year of work and have someone else come in and finish the script off.

Cinelinx's source also confirms the report that Simon Kinberg was taking over writing duties on the film.  The source says that Kinberg's key job to do in the re-write is to make the story more manageable budget-wise.  This is due to the fact that Whitta's script was reportedly too expensive.  That being said, it is expected that Whitta's script will remain largely intact with the story more-or-less the same.

As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
