The first Star Wars
Stand Alone film, directed by Gareth Edwards and slated for a December
16th, 2016 release date, has found its new writer! A new report from The Hollywood Reporter claims Chris Weitz has replaced Gary Whitta, who left the project earlier this month. Weitz is best known for his writing credits on the 2002 film About A Boy, which he was nominated for an Oscar for, and the upcoming live action Cinderella film from Disney, which hits theaters on March 13th.
I can't say I'm too familiar with Weitz as a writer, but I'm intrigued to see what his take on Star Wars is and how he takes what Whitta has already done and finalize for the big screen. This does seem to negate a previous rumor that Simon Kinberg was taking over writing duties on the new film, but given Kinberg's role behind the scenes in all Star Wars
projects right now he could still have some hand in the script. Very
little is known about what the first stand alone film is. Rumor run
from it involving mostly new characters to it being about a showdown between two famous characters. Just last we got our first casting rumors for the film, so it seems things are really heating up behind the scenes.
As always this is just a rumor until confirmed or denied by Lucasfilm or Disney.
