After much speculation, it has been confirmed that the trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will debut this weekend, November 28, 29, and 30, in select Regal Cinemas this weekend. The theatre chain announced today that at theatres in nine US cities will feature the trailer in front of all movies playing. The lucky theatres are:
State | City | Theatre Name |
CA | Irvine | Edwards Irvine Spectrum 22 & IMAX |
CA | San Diego | Edwards Mira Mesa Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX |
GA | Atlanta | Regal Atlantic Station Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX |
IL | Chicago | Regal City North Stadium 14 IMAX & RPX |
NY | New York | Regal Union Square Stadium 14 |
PA | Warrington | Regal Warrington Crossing Stadium 22 & IMAX |
TN | Knoxville | Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 IMAX & RPX |
TX | Houston | Edwards Houston Marq'E Stadium 23 IMAX & RPX |
WA | Seattle | Regal Thornton Place Stadium 14 & IMAX |
I have to say, this is an interesting way to debut the trailer. I would have thought Lucasfilm/Disney would want as many people to see it as possible, and this doesn't seem to accomplish that (and no, I'm not just jealous because my home town, Toronto, is not on the list!) Regardless, I think we are all extremely excited to see the trailer, hopefully it gets an online release this weekend as well!
UPDATE: As expected, there has been some backlash to the whole 9-theaters-in-9-cities-in-one-country thing. But there is still hope. The team over Screen Rush are hearing that more theaters will be announcing their plans for the trailer later today.

Keep an eye out today as additional theaters announce their @starwars trailer plans. More locations to be added!

UPDATE #2: AMC and Cinemark Theaters have also announced that they will be showing the trailer at select theaters, but no word yet on which theaters. Regal Cinemas appears to have jumped the gun on the announcement and has removed various posts about it online.
