Since Star Wars Episode VII was announced, fans have speculated a great deal about which of the favorite characters from previous films might show up in the upcoming sequels. Now that the big three- Mark, Carrie & Harrison- are officially on board, it begs the question; where's Wedge?
Denis Lawson, the actor behind one of the most iconic minor characters in the Star Wars Saga, Wedge Antilles, recently spoke to The Courier and confirmed that he was offered a role in Episode VII, but turned it down.
"When asked if the next new Denis Lawson film to be screened there would be Star Wars, he replied: “I’m not going to do that.”
Asked if it was because Disney had taken over the franchise, he replied: “They asked me but it just would have bored me.”"
Mr. Lawson's distaste for Star Wars is nothing new. Even back in the 90's he warned his nephew Ewan McGregor not to take the role of Obi-Wan in the Prequel Trilogy. Unfortunately for some actors movies are just a simple job to them and they don't share the same passion for their projects that we the fans do. Even the late, legendary Sir. Alec Guinness was said to not be a fan of Star Wars at all.
The most interesting thing we can take from this is that Lucasfilm was indeed wanting to put Wedge in Episode VII in some way. Now that Denis has turned down the role, will he be re-cast, or will Wedge be left out of the film completely? I suppose time will tell.
