Disney Expects Star Wars to Have a 40 year "Useful Life"

By: Dominic Jones

We all know that Star Wars is forever, but how long does Disney expect it to be useful to them. Approximately 40 years, according to Fiscal Year 2013 the Fiscal Year 2013 Annual Financial Report And Shareholder Letter.  The report was sent out yesterday and caused some excitement when it revealed that the Star Wars Rebels premiere would be happening in the summer, rather than the fall as previously expected.  Hidden away in the report was this little gem about Disney's long term plans for the galaxy far, far away,

"Intangible assets primarily consist of intellectual property based on the Star Wars franchise with an estimated useful life of approximately 40 years. The goodwill reflects the value to Disney from leveraging Lucasfilm intellectual property across our distribution channels, taking advantage of Disney's established global reach."

While initially that may seem as a shock since we want Star Wars to go on forever but think about where you'll be 40 years from now.  That's a long way away and gives lots of opportunity for content.  And that's just the expectation, who knows where Star Wars will be in 40 years and what we can expect from it.

  1. It's not about where WE will be in 40 years, it's that 40 years from now there still will be Star Wars fans that want to see new movies. Nevermind us 40 years from now, what about the new fans 40 years from now?

  3. My only issue with this is that Disney tends to take whatever it has acquired and regurgitates it until no one wants to see any more. Instead of coming out with new content, it's likely they'll rehash the same stories over and over again with new characters, and our beloved franchise will be ground into the dirt, and the whinging will be way worse than it ever was during the prequels. It's hard for me to hope when this has been their pattern, such as with Aladdin, The Lion King, Escape to Witch Mountain, and pretty much anything that ever touched the Disney Channel.

In short, I'd rather have a few more good years than 40 years of crap. I'm hoping that Disney will take to heart their past and not apply it in the same way to something else I love.

    I really hope I'm wrong.

  4. I am 20 years old, i remember watching the originals before The Plutomanian menace I like to call it. I hated the idea adding science to the Force, Midichlorians, really? That pretty much f*cked Alec's famous line about the force. They're gonna turn the franchise into an overused 77 year old hooker with saggy tits. After Abrams, let it die in peace! That's what a true fan would want and new movies is even pushing it. I have high hopes for J.J to give the franchise redemption but a year ago I would be saying this is not a good idea.

  5. The good news is that the midichlorian shet was only mentioned in the first movie. it seems they realized that fans hated it and just pretended that it never happened.
