JJ Abrams Talks Episode VII Secrecy

If you're a movie fan and on the internet during the lead up to Star Wars Episode VII director JJ Abram's last major motion picture, Star Trek Into Darkness then you heard one thing over and over again: Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Khan - which turned out to be a lie.  One that many Star Trek fans felt was a mistake.  Star Wars fans have been wondering if we're in for a similar experience leading up to Episode VII.  Abrams recently spoke with The Telegraph about that very subject and he assured fans that Episode VII will be different,

Abrams tried to keep secret the identity of the villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch – something he now regrets. “We were trying to preserve the unexpected for the audience, but it came across as if we were trying to be too clever,” he says.

“Star Wars is in every way a different animal. It’s always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I’ve been used to, so I’m sure there’ll be some sort of compromise. But it feels to me like there’s a purity in not knowing every little thing.”

The compromise he suggests is something Lucasfilm president and Episode VII producer Kathleen Kennedy addressed back at Cinema Con when she said that Lucasfilm would "Think differently" about secrecy and embrace the fact that fans want to know as much as possible while still keeping a few things secret.

Not to say that the production on Episode VII will be an open book, far from it in fact.  Abrams also described the scene in his office while he wrote the, now finished, Episode VII script,

"My god. My office… I’m working on the Star Wars script today and the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing.  It seems rather extreme."

The script is finished. That;s what was announced this last week. Filing is supposed to begin in May, according to JJ Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy.
